Beebo Saves Christmas
Qualitywise that was passable. Not great. Not bad. Nothing to write home about. Nothing to complain about.
The special existing interests me. I'll talk about one thing in the special I liked and then talk about how and why the special even happened.
I like that Santa is black. And he's voiced by Ernie Hudson. He's not just the coolest Ghostbuster anymore. Now he's also the coolest Santa.
I was all set to compliment DC and The Arrowverse for synergy. But there was literally no DC logo credit on the episode. Berlanti had his production logo, and so did WB Animation, but it feels like WB is distancing it from DC. Which is insane in my book. How can I compliment DC for synergy when it refuses to own how goofy that was?
And the sad and messed up thing there is realizing this would make a passable series. And unlike the DC Extended Universe, I like that The Arrowverse tries to make itself a bit more accessible to younger audiences through tie-ins like this and younger-gearing shows like Stargirl.
Part of me is cynically wondering if it got rid of the DC ties, so whoever wrote the Legends Of Tomorrow episode introducing the Beebo toy wouldn't get creator residuals. I searched the credits and there was no "Beebo created by" credit which suggests the special untied itself from the comic book franchise to screw over Beebo's creator. Which is like the most DC thing ever, whether it brands itself that or not.
Honestly, the biggest selling point to me in the idea of turning this into a series is that we'd get plushies of Beebo and his friends. I very much want them after seeing that.
In short, DC gets SOME marketing credit, but ultimately not much. And the special itself is just so-so. **1/2.
