Young Justice: Phantoms "Death And Rebirth"
Crap. I did not need that tag. I don't agree with Greg Weisman about how all endings should be "Life goes on," but it still would have been that without the tag. Room for more and a ton of unanswered questions. That exact scene could have been put at the beginning of the next season and nothing would change.
Except this episode would have felt satisfying. Weisman doesn't get that distinction in his writing. Life CAN go on. But we should also be allowed to enjoy it and the good moments should be allowed to breathe. I question the actual morality of believing differently. I think it's a personal failing of Weisman's. And as harsh as it sounds, I believe it.
Here is something you are not supposed to believe. But it's actually true. You are allowed to enjoy television. It is not a crime to watch something that you enjoy and makes you feel good. Something that does so is not automatically inferior in quality or needs to be (or even should be) considered a guilty pleasure. Producers of shows like this believe great television and great drama only occurs by punishing the viewer. If Weisman ever tells you that, he's a liar. I will say that. It is not remotely true and it is not remotely a huge ask to be able to watch a great show and enjoy it. We are not the bad guys. We have done nothing wrong. We don't deserve to be crapped on on a weekly basis. It's weird so many fans of so much crap like Young Justice actually believe we do. But actual PRODUCERS who believe differently simply do not have the talent to deliver satisfying stories. They need to create false drama because they don't have the writing skills to satisfy you. It's not because they are invested in realism. Good things occur in real life. It's because they untalented in the craft of writing and bad at their jobs. And I will get crap for this opinion, especially directed as a genre icon like Greg Weisman. But I firmly believe it and stand by it 100%. Weisman doesn't piss off us at the end of most seasons because he believes that's how the best storytelling works. It's because he's not smart or talented enough to do anything different. Simple as that.
Oh, bad Matt Zimmer! Taking personal shots at a creator's talents and skills! How dare you? But you know what? If there is a season five, Greg Weisman has yet another opportunity to prove me wrong. I could be.
But he won't. Because I'm not. But for now, if Weisman craps all over me, I'm gonna crap on him right back. Revenge Poops are totally a thing in the Matt Zimmerverse. You do not want to see my apartment.
I was going to discuss the ins and outs of the episode, what I liked, what I didn't, but that ending made me believe it's not worth the bother. I would have given the episode a solid four stars before the tag. Now? I'm pissed instead, and don't find Icicle Jr. at the wedding cute anymore. Sue me. Television does not need to be the ordeal Weisman makes it. It just doesn't. He simply chooses to make it so. Forget him and this show. It's dreck and you deserve better. *.
