Creature Commandos Animated Series

For starters, although it's TV-MA (so far) it isn't gratuitous. That can obviously change in weeks ahead but I'm not skeeved out yet.

The continuity backstory of the Suicide Squad is a freaking nightmare. Which Extended Universe stuff is canon and which isn't? James Gunn should have canceled Peacemaker and started over entirely fresh. He saddled an entirely new continuity with unnecessary confusion solely out of vanity. I don't appreciate that.

Like the new DC Studios Logo. Simplified over the previous DC Logo and doesn't take nearly a minute to get going.

Could have been worse. It's not desperate-to-offend TV-MA like Harley Quinn. At least not yet. 3 stars.

Figures Circe's groupies are incels.

The sex scene was gratuitous but it was the worst scene in the episode.

I love that Dr. Phosphorus keeps you guessing when he's smiling.

But we'll talk about them first. I love that G.I. Robot was Easy Company! How cool is that?!

I also loved the political button being pushed when G.I. Robot is brought into a meeting of rightwing White Supremacists and ding ding ding! These guys are Nazis! It's the right button to push BECAUSE THEY ARE! They fit that parameters entirely. Except in the modern era of the United States, Nazis are currently tolerated. It is not illegal to profess those beliefs, much less a death sentence. I actually think whether something like that being considered legal and fine and dandy in the modern era is actually something to debate, but because it's currently legal, (and in this political climate trendy) G.I. Robot is a mass-murdering psychopath instead of a hero. And the subversive ironic part of the episode is that G.I. Robot's parameters never ONCE changed. The world did. Is it for the better? Unclear in my mind.

The live-action footage on the TV makes it easier to accept this continuity sharing space with live-action stuff. I don't know why that is, but it does.

I'll talk about why this episode is a failure for DC Studios and moreover how this specific failure could have been prevented. And since James Gunn wrote the episode, and didn't even see this as a failure to begin with, I really question the logic of putting him in charge of all this. This episode says he does not have the correct mindset for this.

It's when the dude begs off killing the Princess instantly and wants to take her for a test drive or whatever gross euphemism the episode used to make two men joke about raping an unconscious woman. I'm not saying the horror of rape can never be explored in this Universe and continuity. At some point, especially because much of this stuff will be R and MA rated, it's inevitable the worst of human nature will be put under that dirty lens.

But it's fucking Episode 3! The literal third thing in the entire goddam continuity! That's inappropriate for this early on, and any goddam showrunner with a LICK of fucking common sense would know that! How the hell does James Gunn not? And I can place the blame SQUARELY on the head of DC Studios about this specific sin because he was the dude dumb and gross enough to write the fucking episode!

James Gunn was the wrong pick for DC Studios. We are in for some rough fucking times. I get no-one else wanted the job, but this is rank storytelling incompetence of the highest level. They would have done better with going with a unknown up and comer who isn't into telling rape jokes for shock value. Did they even THINK to ask Star Trek and Hannibal's Bryan Fuller? Because he never would have made this mistake in a million fucking years. Because it's a pretty obvious mistake for a showrunner of a huge multimedia franchise expanding into family material to avoid.

James Gunn sucks, DC Studios is going to fail, and after this, on some level, I'm rooting for it to fail. The good news is I doubt I will be disappointed. I never had ANY faith in James Gunn, but until this episode I was unaware of what a purely shitty writer he was. That moment was quite eye-opeing to me. 1 1/2 stars.

Frankenstein continues to creep me out. Fuck Rick Flag for enabling his toxicity and fuck Rick Flag for planning to warn his genocidal psycho princess. It's called treason, Flag. Look it up.

G.I. Robot hasn't been rebuilt (yet). I hope he is (soon).

The Weasel stuff was seriously heartbreaking, but I wasn't crazy about everything else. 3 stars.

They are trying to play Frankenstein off as humorous but he sucks on every level.

Forget the fact that Flag committed treason and is going to get the Commandos killed. How is it he's agreed to reintroduce Frank to the Bride even after all of the horrible things he's said and done? Killing him off at the end was underwhelming too.

Clayface fake-out or not, I actually believe Circe's visions are legit.

This was the worst project to kick off DC Studios. 2 stars.
