I expected to hate that, but it was not what I feared. Don't get me wrong, the movie made a lot of choices I don't agree with. But it's Fincher and the movie Ripley died. I expected nihilism and got self-sacrifice instead. I'll live with it.

I think the biggest objection I have was Fincher killing off Newt and Riggs at the beginning of the movie. Ripley saving them was James Cameron's victory, and it felt disrespectful to Cameron for Fincher to undo Ripley's greatest triumph off-screen just so he wouldn't be saddled with those characters on the prison planet. That's kind of dirty.

But the movie, despite being set on a prison planet, filled with self-admitted murderers and rapists, is not unending misery even with the sad ending. Ripley gave her life to stop the thing. Sure, Bishop II was almost certainly lying about being able to save her. But because his intentions were to let the creature live, Ripley couldn't even take THAT chance. It was a pretty cool moment.

I feel like I should hate this film more than I do, but I don't. That said, I'm still pissed on behalf of Newt. 3 stars.
