My friend told me to stop quoting the Monkees. I thought she was joking. But then I saw her face.
Baymax! "Kiko"
Wow. That eleven minute cartoon was literally better than every single episode of Big Hero 6: The Series. Fans of that show were a little nervous that THIS show could retcon that entire series if it decided to go in a different direction. Here is my view on that: Retcon away. I never realized what a poor substitute the animated series was for the film until seeing this.
Now I didn't exactly DISLIKE Big Hero 6: The Series. But I never connected to it the way I did watching Baymax connect with Kiko here. I thought this was great. The only reason I'm not giving that five stars out of the gate is because it's the first episode and I kind of want to use it to set a realistic baseline for the other five. 4 stars.
Baymax! "Cass"
It seems a bit gratituitous to slam Big Hero 6: The Series in every episode review for this series, but I'm going to do it in this one again at least.
Felony Carl was a funny character as a regular customer of Cass'. What he also was was an arch joke character for the comic book spoof the series was. The movie wasn't an actual superhero spoof. It was genuine. And this show reminds me that of fact. Also it gives Cass more facetime, positive recogition, and character development than she had in that show's entire three seasons.
Yeah, I'm loving this show so far. 5 stars.
Baymax! "Sofia"
Now it's my turn to talk smack about Turning Red. I am not a woman, but if I had my first period I'd want Baymax there and not the horrible mom from that movie.
After the sensitive and honest manner this episode explored the subject, I find Turning Red even more lacking than I already did. And I already hated that movie. 4 1/2 stars.
Baymax! "Mbita"
The gay themes in this episode are both G-rated and no big deal.
That is pretty much the lousiest allergy Mbita could have been stuck with. It all worked out though. 4 stars.
Baymax! "Yachi"
The character design of the cat was amazing. Mochi is cute but Yachi is quite expressive.
First of a two-parter. This is the first patient that hurts Baymax when he tries to help him.
Cute. But the human element was missing, which was the biggest selling point of the first four shorts. 3 1/2 stars.
Baymax! "Baymax"
Great wrap-up to the season, but I can't help but crossly point out that Baymax is playing a little fast and loose with this secret identities of Big Hero 6 at the end. It was a cute gag, so I'll allow it.
Nice! 4 1/2 stars.
