Disenchantment "Love Is Hell"
Intriguing ending. Also God is maddeningly straightforward which makes his dumb, honest answers all the more infuriating. I would be less pissed if he were less open about how much he sucks.
Whatever else you want to say about this episode (or this series), I think the scene of Bean trying to use reverse psychology on Satan to make him not want to marry her proves once and for all that she is the single greatest female character that Matt Groening ever created. I'm sorry, Lisa Simpson and Leela fans. You can hate this show for not meeting your expectations. But that is actually true. Bean is the best female character in this Groening Universe of nonsense. Bar none. And that scene proves it with receipts.
What else is there to say, really? 4 1/2 stars.
Disenchantment "The Good, The Bad, And The Bum-Bum"
The funniest scene in the episode was Bean's whole "Hold me back, Jerry," scene. Oh, man. That's why she's the best character on the show.
Elfo had a ton of good moments too. Yelling at his mother as a baby in a deep voice to stop was hilarious, and he made the "Mom" "Dad" thing as weird as only he could. My favorite bit was him responding to the fight to the death with his Ogre half-brother with "Piece of cake!... That's what I want for my last meal."
We took the war between the ogres and the gnomes for granted as some sort of sick joke, but by making Elfo half-ogre and part orphan of that war, it's gives that dark, formerly frivolous plotline some actual gravitas. Futurama did the same thing with the idea that the Mutants in the future are banished to the sewers. They turned that sick joke into actual plot-lines about Mutant rights and Leela's family. And I hope this show does the same thing here. There is not a moment in the Pilot I hated more than, "So that was war. I liked it. But I didn't love it." It would mean a lot to me if that bitter joke actually meant something.
Good episode. 4 stars.
Disenchantment "The Cabinet Of Dr. Chazzzzz"
The first half was super dark. It wasn't funny. I found it upsetting.
The second part about Zog's emotional journey was more interesting. It's amazing to me that Zog has turned into the most sympathetic character on the entire show. He certainly wasn't that in Season 1. Take shots at the show for always seeming to head back to the status quo between finales, but Zog as a character has truly grown over the seasons. 3 1/2 stars.
Disenchantment "Goon Baby Goon"
Bean has healing powers? Interesting.
I like that the people are Dreamland aren't stupid hicks, they are sophisticated urban boneheads.
I liked the gag of Jerry saying he aimed where they were going to be. Somebody plays Space Invaders.
Cool. 3 1/2 stars.
Disenchantment "The Pitter-Patter Of Little Feet"
Disenchantment "What To Expect When You're Expecting Parasites"
Great ending. Bean being saved by her mermaid girlfriend was awesome.
Elfo's a noun AND a verb. He fainted from being brave.
I like Luci saying it was a religion, not a cult.
Most if it was good but the ending was great. 4 stars.
Disenchantment "The Unbearable Lightning Of Bean"
This is the point in the season when the show reverts to the status quo. But I don't find much of it interesting this time out.
It's basically all about cute scenes between Bean and Zog. And that's all the show is now so I'm starting to get bored. Turning the show into cute scenes between Zog and Jaspar won't fix that problem.
I was very upset Bear died. I could think of no good storytelling reason for it to happen.
The one interesting thing to me was Bean's flashback over the mermaid's corpse hinting at what went down during the great Elven purge of the castle. The images are so unclear that it's still not quite evident who the bad guys are. The mermaid's corpse however hints that it's probably the humans'.
I was mostly bored with this. 2 1/2 stars.
Disenchantment "Spy Vs. Spy Vs. Spy"
This episode had the opposite problem from the last. There was too much going on. It became unwieldy.
I loved the sight gag where Bean falls face-first onto her bed and puts out the candle flame with her hand without looking. "Ow." Pretty much. That was awesome.
Mop Girl is pretty awesome too. She found out Luci's darkest secret: He's nice.
I love the bit where the guy cheers the executioner losing his big axe. So he pulls out a smaller one and says, "What are you so happy about? Now it will just take longer." I love that joke and I love this show for giving me that joke.
I like the Trog dismissing the concerns that they could potentially kill the Savior with their goo plan. Because that's what Saviors do: They Die. They get killed by the people they are saving. Without fail. It's part of their entire package.
The ending confused me. Luckily I can watch the next episode right away. I think I'll do that right now. 4 stars.
Disenchantment "The Goo-Bye Girl"
"Crazy, right?" Aw! I don't want Bean to turn into her mother. That specific cliffhanger show whys this series is unlike every other Matt Groening show.
I love that the Executioner is the new sub because the old teacher tried to form a teacher's union. They won't try that again.
I'm glad Derek didn't really kill that elf. Because it would have made "I guess we aren't getting ice cream," the saddest line ever.
"Sticks and stones may break my bones but lead pipes can do real damage." I'll need to remember that one.
Loving Mop Girl more and more. I fear if I start calling her Mary, I'll love her less. I won't risk it.
Luci was super annoying this episode. But even I love the bit where he pointed out to Bean that she just sold him Elfo's soul. Gotta watch demons. They pay close attention to that crap. Legalese is their jam. Never shake hands with one and say "Deal!" It's just common sense, really.
Solid. Crazy, right? 4 stars.
Disenchantment "Bean Falls Apart"
Very predictable finale. I guessed most everything before it happened (besides Bear's reappearance), including the Mora save at the end. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad Bear's still alive, but this was a placeholder finale rather than a watershed one.
My favorite bit is Satan confessing he can't spend an eternity with Dagmar before she screams at him she doesn't like whispering. Love is Hell, right, Matt Groening? I also can't deny Dagmar saying she can work with the head is super sinister in its implications. Bad things are about to happen because she knows how to use that specific thing to destroy everyone.
It was fine. But not great. 3 1/2 stars.
