Disney's Destino
Me finally seeing this is long overdue, and since it's on Disney+, I had no more excuses. This animated short, originally envisioned by Walt Disney and Salvador Dali(!) was finally completed decades after both artists' deaths and released in 2003. It is visually gorgeous, very, VERY weird, and because of the (tasteful and shadowed) nudity, decidedly adult.
Because of the adult themes I realize why it might have been such an arduous process to be finished. In fact, Disney couldn't debut it in theaters in 2003 either, and had to make it an extra on a Fantasia Blu-Ray. That's appropriate because there IS a lot of Fantasia in it. As cutesy and vanilla as people remember old Disney cartoons, the truth is Walt himself was always interested in experimentation and pushing the boundaries of the medium. The now-late Roy Disney recognized this and made sure this finally saw the light of day. It's unlike everything else in the legitimate Disney canon. It's beautiful, and it's bizarreness borders on frightening to me.
Good on Disney for finally finishing it, bad on me for putting off watching my Fantasia Blu-Ray for nearly 20 years. But Disney+ makes the short easy to access and view by itself. *****.
