Genndy Tartakovsy's Primal "Sea Of Despair"
I did not care for last season at all but I kind of liked this season's premiere. Much of the life and death struggle didn't have to do with predators and prey, which has gotten exhausting. By the second half of the episode, things had sort of returned to form, but I liked the sea voyage because it was relatively quiet.
It was also stupid. What was Spear thinking? He barely packed any food or provisions for Fang, and it's just good luck that Fang doesn't ever ponder eating him, even though he probably should have at several points. This IS all Spear's fault after all.
The whales were significant to me and I hope a harbinger for the rest of the season. They were the first living things we've seen that either didn't try to kill Spear and Fang, or that Spear and Fang didn't try to kill themselves. That specific thing was the biggest thing that troubled me about Season 1 so it was nice to break that curse right out of the gate.
I liked it better than most of last season. 4 stars.
Genndy Tartakovsy's Primal "Shadow Of Fate"
Curiouser and curiouser. We don't see too many people on the show and we just saw a lot of them.
Surprisingly emotionally messy episode. This show's lines are usually so clear-cut, but no matter how cute the red T-Rex is with Fang, he's still a monster.
Them tripping out on pyschedelic apples and then playing in the leaves was a gas though.
Suffice it to say, medicine was no great shakes back then. Yikes.
In the end Fang chose Spear. It's an interesting choice, but both she and Spear learned some harsh things about each other. They can be friends, but as long as they are, neither will be welcome in their respective tribes. And that's a bit sad.
I wonder if Fang could have ever been able to forgive Spear if HE had killed the red T-Rex himself. I'm glad we didn't have to find out.
Good ep. 4 stars.

Genndy Tartakovsky's Primal "Dawn Of Man"
I like that Fang is still sad from the events of the last episode and Spear still feels a bit guilty about them.
I didn't see much in the episode that deserved a TV-MA rating.
The animation of the Viking running was great. Interestingly, I never get the sense that the show has a higher budget than other Adult Swim shows like Venture Brothers and Rick And Morty. I think it simply looks better because Genndy knows how to use that low budget better, and make things looks great, even if they aren't actually expensive. That's my theory.
Handing Spear a sword is about as dangerous as handing him a nuke. Serious damage is ahead.
Mira being found already says this show's arcs don't live or die by the finale. Which is good. I'm guessing she dies next week (because this show is freaking grim) but I like that we won't have to spend an entire season looking for her.
The season has definitely piqued my interest. ****.

Genndy Tartakovsky's Primal "The Red Mist'
Episodes this grim are why I don't like the series. There's no-one to freaking root for.
Also, there is NO way Spear should have beaten the Vikings. Yeah, he has Fang for an edge, but he himself should not be that great in battle against them. Yes, he's fought against nature. As a hunter / gatherer versus beast. The Viking are human warriors that are an army that use heavy weapons, wear armor, and have the language skills to organize into a fighting force. No matter what monsters Spear has previously defeated, he should not be taking out Vikings so easily, especially using a weapon he's never used before. It's not as bad as Dawn slaying Ubervamps on the last episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. But it's the same ballpark. I get it's Spear's show, and he needs his own victories. But as far as human warriors go, they needed to let Fang do most of the heavy lifting if they wanted it to be believable.
The one thing I liked was the next episode promo, or lack of one. Call it Genndy's Law if you must.
But really, this is some dour crap. *.

Genndy Tartakovsky's Primal "The Primal Theory"
And now we see why there was no preview for this episode.
To be brutally honest, I would have liked it more if there were an actual narrative connection to the story itself. Since there wasn't, the ending disappointed me.
Still quite an episode though. ****.

Genndy Tartakovsky's Primal "Vidarr"
I keep forgetting that Fang was a female and the show just reminded me in the grossest and most graphic way possible.
I am not dumb enough to believe that Mira is on this show for the long haul, but as of now, she and Spear make a good team.
See, if I were the Vikings I would have left well enough alone after finding out about Fang. Really, they were living a dirty lifestyle and it finally caught up to them. They should have cut their losses and moved on. Not smart. But vengeance never is.
Pretty good;. I was wondering what was going to happen after last week's detour. ***1/2.

Genndy Tartakovsky's Primal "The Collossaeus, Part 1"
That bit with Spear and Mira with the eggs was comical. It's sort of funny that Fang doesn't kill them both for it.
Seeing one of the eggs break later on was tragic. But it also suggests that the Queen's hold over them is beyond tenuous. She break the other two she's opened up the million dollar and 500 grand cases on Deal Or No Deal. Her leverage is entirely gone.
Interesting that the big guy was a slave too. I loved Spear calming Fang upon seeing the Queen threaten to break the egg. They also got into the swing of things disturbingly quickly at the end.
Still worried about the Chieftain. Although Norse Hell is where he belongs.
Solid episode. ****.

Genndy Tartakovsky's Primal "The Colossaeus II"
I'll tell you one thing about this show. It runs quick. It doesn't feel like it's 22 minutes. I'm watching it, I'm engrossed in it, and then, boom, it's over.
That Queen is beyond evil. I appreciate the producers had enough tact not to show us the actual slaughter of the village by the giant. Even Fang finds it distasteful.
I love the repetition theme explored by having all of the battles at the beginning boarded exactly the same. As violent and horrible as it is, it suggests life has also become dreary and humdrum for Spear and Fang, and that's not just oppression that's destroying them bit by bit. It's monotony and boredom.
That was a very solid episode. ****1/2.

Primal "The Colossaeus III"
As I said last week this show runs quick! I'm absorbed in it for 22 short minutes, and then BAM, it's over!
I could go on and on about how and why this episode was great, and a refreshing antidote from season 1's unending misery and grimness, but really, that first paragraph is all that needs to be said. And I already said it last week! *****.

Genndy Tartakovsky's Primal "Echoes Of Eternity"
I know Spear's death is essentially what the entire series was building towards, but I don't have to like that fact. I never did. It's why I could never fully embrace the show.
The last scene was kind of fulfilling though, wasn't it? ***.
