Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous "Beneath The Surface"

Spoiler

That was good, but I'm questioning why I'm still watching the show. I'm as tired of dinosaurs as the campers are, and feel every inch of their frustration and fear. It never freaking ends, and dinosaurs never shut it off. But that's the premise of the show, so I'm wondering why I'm still here.

Sheesh. 3 1/2 stars.

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous "At Least...."

Spoiler

Sabretooth tiger? This franchise is really reaching.

That primal scream scene was beyond lame. Embarrassing, actually.

Invisible compound? Like I said. The show is reaching.

Didn't like it. 1 1/2 stars.

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous "Turning Dr. Turner"

Spoiler

Talking robot dinosaurs? Like I said, really reaching.

Man, Yaz is kind of pathetic. What kind of hot mess do you have to be to be rejected by Ben? Yeah, he misread things completely. But that should NOT have been his reaction to her if she was actually coming on to him. Embarrassing.

The inventor of the Brad is a total brat.

Eh. 2 1/2 stars.

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous "Rude Awakening"

Spoiler

I think it's good they are exploring PTSD, but you can't just pick and choose that specific psychology. Yaz suffering from that so severely here is inconsistent with her jokey and flirty demeanor in the previous episode. What kills me is they could have explored this exact premise with Ben and it would be consistent.

I'm with Yaz in being upset that the kids missed their ride for helping a dinosaur. After all that? Screw the dinosaurs. And screw Darius for always screwing over his friends and always convincing them to do the wrong thing that is against their own self-interest. These dinosaurs shouldn't even exist. They are a literal abomination. Darius wanting to freaking HELP them makes him the most annoying and useless character on the show. I've come to loathe the little creep.

I'm glad trauma is being explored. I am not glad that Darius has still yet to really be called on his crap. This is getting old and he keeps screwing over the group time and again. 2 1/2 stars.

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous "The Long Game"

Spoiler

I disagree with many of the conclusions the episode made. Yes, Sammy had little chance if she confronted Kash by herself. But nobody in cartoons like this ever does the obvious. Maybe it's because they're kids, and it's forgivable. But I think this season could have been REALLY short if I were in charge of those kids and not an idiot like Darius.

There are 6 of the kids. Kash is most dangerous when he's giving orders to the robots. If I were in charge of the kids, I'd 6 on 1 bum-rush him and knock him the hell out. Yeah, there were two Brads there at the time. But they had to confront them anyways, along with some uninvited Raptors. Bad guys like Kash can be thumped thoroughly and good if you take them down FAST. (This is also what superheroes needed to be doing to Amazo, Taskmaster, and the Super Adaptoid). They wouldn't need to be playing The Long Game if they had the wits to play the Take 'Em Down Hard And Fast Game. One big problem with my idea is that it would be majorly, majorly violent, and this is a kids show. But still, I don't think Sammy was wrong for wanting to confront and take down Kash when she did. She just needed proper back-up and a quickly put-together plan.

I mentioned I've come to loathe Darius this season. No sooner had I written that than this kid decides for all the kids they have to stay and the protect the dinosaurs and they can't leave until the job is done. In fact, one of the reasons I felt supportive of Sammy doing what she felt was right, is that all of the kids have been far too deferential to Darius' insipid wants and needs to their own sorrow. If Darius think some righteous payback is a bad idea, that means it's probably actually a good one. The pained look at Yaz's face as he said that made me loathe the stinker even more than I already do.

Ben continues to be the series' most valuable player, and the only one of the kids to get in an actual win by spying on Kash and observing he's got a phone. Do I find Ben's "Nature Boy" shtick obnoxious? Yes. But none of the rest of those dumb kids thought to tail Kash.

If I were Darius, I'd be calling "Dogpile on Kash!" and the season is over. Because Darius is Darius instead, this crap will never end. 2 1/2 stars.

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous "Mission Critical"

Spoiler

I'm digging this. I've been mentioning what a little turd Darius is. That might be the point of the season. Him having no idea his friends were experiencing nightmares and trauma suggests it's possible he might be about to learn about thoughtfulness and doing what is best for others rather than his own wants and needs. The jury is still out there, and the series could still mess it up, but this was the step in the right direction.

I bet there will be a ton of people upset over how underwhelming the Brads are. Their scanning capabilities are laughable. They always miss their shooting targets unless an actual person is actually aiming them. And they seem to be super easy to destroy. But I actually find that quite realistic. And it's a bit comforting to me too as someone who didn't believe they belonged in the franchise. Jurassic Park may be science fiction, but it's set in the present. And present day robots are startlingly ineffective. Almost every robot currently in service in the world has only a single function, because mankind has not developed the robotics technology to make them capable of more than one thing. The fact that the Brads suck and don't work as they are supposed to isn't a case of the writers making overly incompetent villains. It's a case of them making more realistic present day technology. And I totally approve of that.

The ending of Darius' brother realizing he was alive was pretty cool.

We'll see how things go, but this is the right path forward. 4 stars.

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous "Staying Alive"

Spoiler

Darius isn't a very good liar, but fortunately he doesn't need to be because Kash is both a narcissist and an idiot.

That huge dinosaur was legit scary. Gave me the willies. Took care of the sabretooth tiger though.

Pretty good. 3 1/2 stars.

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous "Technical Difficulties"

Spoiler

Not the baby dinos!

Finding out none of the chips worked sort of made the adventure feel pointless, didn't it? Oh well. At least the kids have a way to talk to Darius now.

Pretty good. 3 1/2 stars.

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous "Dino-Sitting"

Spoiler

Those baby dinos sure are cute.

Kash is an underwhelming villain simply because he still hasn't figured out that Darius has accomplices. It's pretty obvious when you think about it. 3 1/2 stars.

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous "Taking Control"

Oh my God, Bumpy at the end is totally Seymour from Futurama! What a great, sad, and unexpected update.

The action on this show continues to be top-notch. I feel like Fast & Furious Spy Racers' tone is totally outside of that franchise. But the scary dinosaur scenes on this show are pure Jurassic Park even if the Dreamworks Animation dialogue is as clunky as Spy Racers.

And also maybe I should amend that. The dialogue may not be great here, but it's nowhere NEAR as clunky as Spy Racers. 4 stars.

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous "Who's The Boss?"

Spoiler

Great ending. Kenji's dad is the Big Bad? That solves quite a few problems. And opens up a ton of new ones. I'm predicting next season is the last. That's a pretty great hook.

The best thing is that him being a villain sort of explains Kenji's pampered and spoiled attitude from the first and second seasons. If he seemed like a spoiled, entitled jerk in the beginning, that's simply how he was raised. I love how perfectly that fits his arc thematically in hindsight.

I also want to give the show a shout-out for being the scariest U.S. kids show in existence. Arguably Doctor Who from the U.K. is scarier. But not every single episode. This show's scares and tension are legit, and pretty consistent episode to episode too.

On the negative side I want to kick the kids for not setting a guard or two on Kash. They are really bad at this.

That was probably the best ending for a season so far. I'll grade the episode accordingly, even if it wasn't actually perfect. 5 stars.

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous "Reunited"

Spoiler

Mr. Kon's kind of a monster.

Darius continues to be stupid.

Glad Kenji was able to shave off that ugly scruff.

Why hasn't Ben showered yet? Gross.

All right. 3 stars.

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous "The Final Test"

Spoiler

I liked the Camp Counselors popping up at the end, but that was pretty much the ONLY thing I liked.

I've mentioned elsewhere that the dialogue on this show is atrocious. But that might not matter if the voice performances aren't as lousy as they are. She-Ra And The Princesses Of Power hired actors out of Canada too. And got performances from people who worked for scale who knocked it out of the park. This show having such annoying voices is unacceptable. 2 1/2 stars.

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous "Battle Lines"

Spoiler

I can't tell if I'm a better person or a worse person than those kids. Tell me if my logic holds up.

Yes, the kids are right that Mr. Kon is dirty. But when Kenji implores them to trust his father for HIS sake, after all they went through, I would have given him that. No question. I would have continued to try and change Kenji's mind. But the sneaking around part of all this? It would be over. Instantly. And that would be the wrong moral decision, which is why I'm a worse person than those kids. But it's the right friendship decision which is why I'm a better person than those kids.

Also, let me be blunt. Those kids got those investors killed. And pretty deliberately if you ask me, knowing full well what would happen when the control chips were disabled. As foolish as Kenji's decision to stand by his father after what he's learned is, his friends have 100% earned his disgust. In fact, one of the most refreshing things about the first four seasons is that the kids didn't go around getting other people eaten by the dinosaurs. Three people in one episode, including a guy they clearly hated. That almost crosses the line from negligent homicide to manslaughter, or even murder. Am I wrong? I don't think so.

I don't know, man. I'm not a happy camper here. For the sole reason that Kenji has the high ground for every single one of his wrong opinions. He really should not. This is a failing of the show. 2 1/2 stars.

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous "Evasive Action"

Spoiler

I think both the bad performances and the lousy dialogue are made markedly worse when the script is as big of a mess as this one was. I felt the kids' reactions to Kenji felt random. While it was refreshing that Darius simply didn't want to talk about Kenji because the subject doesn't interest him compared to the crisis, the problem is that the show could have easily given that exact facet to Brooklyn or one of the others, and nothing would have changed about the episode. Darius had that perspective not because it was in character. But because somebody needed to, and he was the most convenient candidate. You can call that type of writing many things. What I would never call it is good or honest characterization. Not even a little bit.

The sewer dinosaur was pretty scary though, although I'm concerned the show is forgetting it IS a show for little kids. Some of these monstrous dinosaurs are far too scary for the target audience.

Wasn't too happy with that, but what else is new? 2 stars.

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous "Shaky Ground"

Spoiler

I have been extremely unkind to this show this season, which is my want, because it sucks. But I will say something complimentary right now.

Brooklyn's character design has unusually expressive eyes. The voice performances and the writing may suck, but the animation around her face exudes excellent grief for us to enjoy. I wish it happened for a character I liked more on a better show. But she has a LOT more sympathy from me than she deserves simply because her eyes seem to actually quiver and shake with misery. I want to compliment a better show for this exact thing. Why can't I yet? It's ticking me off. 3 1/2 stars.

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous "Out Of The Pack"

Spoiler

I am worried about Bumpy.

Changing the passwords was a clever idea.

Neat seeing Nedry's lost canister from the first film.

A couple of Compies are annoyances. A pack of them are deadly.

Decent. 3 1/2 stars.

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous "The Leap"

Spoiler
LGTB representation is good. The episode itself is just okay. 3 stars.

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous "Clean Break"

Spoiler
Actually that was pretty good. Mae finding the counselor and Darius' brother at the end was a nice ending. 4 stars.

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous "The Core"

Spoiler

The tentative romance is sweet, but unlike Yaz, I can't stand Sammy.

The kids bragged about not fighting over saving the killer dinosaur. Here's a thought. They not only should have fought over it, but the side suggesting they leave it to die should have won.

Bumpy complicating things at the end.

Cute. 3 stars.

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous "Arrival"

Spoiler

Good.

Bumpy beating the mind-control partly through sheer force of will is kind of dumb, but it's a kids show, so it's okay. Although smashing the controller is given as a secondary reason, but for me that makes even less sense. The science there is unsound.

The Spinosaur continues to scare the poop outta me.

Above average episode. 4 stars.

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous "The Last Stand"

Spoiler

Dino Battle Royale! One of the T-Rexes dying at the end meant the stakes were real. Or did they? Not clear.

I like Kon trying to prey on Sammy's very real weaknesses until they both figured out she's evolved past them. I woulda kicks him in the nuts instead of the breadbasket, but this IS a kiddie show.

Great. 4 1/2 stars

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous "The Nublar Six"

Spoiler

The T-Rex didn't die. Eh. But do you know who did? Cash. I give the show a lot of credit for not having him pop up later in the season as a surprise villain. Dude legit got ate.

It's the last season and this is the last episode. I told myself ahead of time that I would not begrudge the show a weak ending too much. 25 years ago, a show with this exact premise wouldn't even HAVE a series finale and would remain forever unfinished. But the Secret Island sort of raises questions for me about Bumpy and the others' survival simply because I haven't seen Dominion yet and it's been awhile since I saw Fallen Kingdom. I knew the ending of the Epilogue sort of ties into the ending of that movie but I don't remember the exact details.

The final episode was fine. Reasonably satisfying and the last shot proves that while for most of the rest of the world, Fallen Kingdom made the world MUCH worse, for Darius is just got MUCH better. It's sort of a wry joke to finish the entire series at that exact point.

I'm looking forward to seeing Dominion and am very glad it looks like the ending of the show didn't spoil any of it. It was a pretty good finale. 4 stars.

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous: Hidden Adventure

Spoiler

Under most circumstances, after a series finale, a mostly self-contained interactive special would be a treat. A sweet dessert and capper to the entire saga. Instead this made me remember why I will not miss this series at all. It is truly inane, even using the fun choose your own adventure gimmick.

I think the thing that cheeses me off about the gimmick that didn't in the Carmen Sandiego special is that Carmen making the choices makes sense. She's in charge. Darius, the character with famously bad judgment and a huge blind spot for dinosaurs gets the final say. The series has always been more collaborative between the characters than that.

Mr. DNA is super annoying. I want to enjoy making bad choices and feeding this group of characters I hate to dinosaurs but his annoying face and voice make it no fun whatsoever. Sheesh. The nerve.

I will not miss this show, and I can only hope this is the last thing in that corner of the franchise. **.
