Looney Tunes Cartoons "Back To School Special"

Spoiler

Test Pest:

Good gag not showing the Proctor's face until the end. His body was pretty expressive due to it looking somewhat disjointed. Although that design looks weird having three fingers.

Daffy was funny too. Good cartoon. 4 stars.

Erase The Leash:

I can't stand Foghorn Leghorn.  1 star.

Buzzard School:

I love Beaky's Italian mother. The animation of them together is very striking and well- done. The designs and the movements say everything.

Honestly, I wish the whole cartoon had just been the two of them. 3 1/2 stars.

Episode Overall: 3 1/2 stars.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Sam-merica / Put The Cat Out - Door Spin / BBQ Bandit"

Spoiler

Sam-merica:

Pretty sure this is how it was with Columbus too.

Bugs is luckier than Gladstone Gander at the end. 3 1/2 stars.

Put The Cat Out - Door Spin:

Porky puts the cat out in the winter? He's a bad owner. 3 stars.

BBQ Bandit:

I like the "Forget Joe's, Eat Here". It's this show recognizing cartoon history. 4 stars.

Episode Overall: 3 1/2 stars.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Happy Birdy To You / Daffy Psychic: New Love / Spring Forward, Fall Flat"

Spoiler

Happy Birdy To You:

Why doesn't Granny question where the pinata came from? 3 stars.

Daffy Psychic: New Love:

Porky / Daffy 'ship? I can see it. Probably about as close as we are going to see LGTB themes in Looney Tunes. 3 1/2 stars.

Spring Forward, Fall Flat:

I liked the Winner Winner Chicken Dinner thing especially it turning into a Superman homage.

The whole Coyote bouncing after the Roadrunner on various levels of highway reminded me of a videogame. I used to love the Roadrunner videogame from the 1980's because when you lost, the Coyote caught the Roadrunner. Sort of gave you extra incentive to lose and you never felt like you were wasting your quarters.

Good cartoon. 4 stars.

Episode Overall: 3 1/2 stars.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Frame The Feline / Daffy Traffic Cop Stop: Boating License / Unlucky Strikes"

Spoiler

Hubert and Bertie! By the end of this, I was feeling bad for Claude. Which is not something I like. Too mean. 2 1/2 stars.

Daffy Traffic Cop Stop: Boating License:

Bizarre, and funny because it's bizarre. 4 stars.

Unlucky Strikes:

Ugh. So Cicero is apparently a regular thing now. He is literally the worst Looney Tunes character ever. He's worse than Elmyra. By far.

That sucked. 0.

Episode Overall: 1 1/2 stars.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Cro-Mag Numb Skulls / Trophy Hunter"

Spoiler

The music was great. And the dinosaur designs were awesome. They animated fantastically, especially when the T-Rex was charging.

Also funny were the expressions on Porky and Daffy when they were being civilized and sophisticated, and when they were hunting the baby dinosaur.

Funny stuff. 4 1/2 stars.

Trophy Hunter:

Can't believe Bugs ever believed Elmer caught 1000 rabbits, let alone one. He said it himself. They've been doing this for nearly a century. Although he IS rounding up a tad.

I love that the award is a giant anvil. Because of course it is. Because it carries weight. Because of course it does.

Hilarious. 4 1/2 stars.

Episode Overall: 4 1/2 stars.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Bathy Daffy / End Of The Leash: Bullseye Painting / Rabbit Sandwich Maker / Put The Cat Out: Window"

Spoiler

Bathy Daffy:

Mediocre. 1 1/2 stars.

End Of The Leash: Bullseye:

I sincerely do not like Foghorn Leghorn. Seeing him so severely punished is nice. 3 stars.

Rabbit Sandwich:

The crazed expression on Elmer's face as he claims everyone loves mayonnaise is that of the sociopath who is always wrong. Can't believe Bugs agrees with him. Mayo is nasty. 2 1/2 stars.

Put The Cat Out: Window:

That's a Fred Flintstone ending right there. 3 1/2 stars.

Episode Overall: 2 1/2 stars.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Pardon The Garden / Put The Cat Out: Flat On The Door / Downward Duck"

Spoiler

Pardon The Garden:

Once I saw who the cartoon would be starring, I knew I'd hate it. In fairness, it's not the disaster Petunia Pig's first cartoon was. But it was still pretty damn bad.

Here's a hint, producers. Every pig character on this show but Porky sucks.* Don't bring any of them back ever again. 1 1/2 stars.

Put The Cat Out: Flat On The Door:

Not the strongest premise for a running gag. 2 1/2 stars.

Downward Duck:

I laughed at Yoga Daffy's manbun. Also thought it was funny what the hoot and ride pose was. 4 stars.

Episode Overall: 2 1/2 stars.

*By the way, Porky actually DOES kinda suck.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Lesson Plan 9 From Outer Space / Balloon Salesman: Baboon / Portal Kombat"

Spoiler

Lesson Plan 9 From Outer Space:

Here's something: In every single character Mel Blanc has ever voiced, I hear a little bit of him in it. Every single one. And yet, to MY ear, Eric Bauza's Bugs Bunny and Marvin the Martian sound like entirely different people. Bauza has an extremely rare gift there than even most of the best and most gifted vocalists don't. And while we're on the subject, his Splinter from Rise Of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles doesn't sound anything like Bugs OR Marvin either.

I love the way Marvin says he'd like to try the Earth Creature and Dealer Bugs telling him the first one was free.

I also like the way Marvin walks on the treadmill.

Bauza really IS something special. 4 stars.

Balloon Salesman: Baboon:

Sort of a groaner. 3 stars.

Portal Kombat:

When I first hear about the premise, I was greatly looking forward to it. Simply because it's something the shorts in the 1950's would have neither the budget or technical know-how to pull off. I get very excited at the idea of Roadrunner cartoons that can only be made using modern techniques.

The verdict? While no, Chuck Jones couldn't have done this one, it also doesn't do the premise justice. If this show were also interested in making dynamic visuals instead of just dumb dynamite jokes, it could have gone bananas and blown our minds. What saddens me is that great modern visuals are not actually outside of Looney Tunes. Duck Dodgers' animation from the early aughts looked almost as nice as Futurama's. I feel like the show had an opportunity to go all out and show us the amazing things a new Looney Tunes project could be capable of, and rhey just decided not to bother. It felt lazy. And I'm disappointed. **1/2.

Episode Overall: 3 stars.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Virtual Morality / Daffy Traffic Cop Stop: Lions / Miner Threat"

Spoiler

Virtual Morality:

I'm torn. I believe Elmer has everything coming to him because he is so damn stupid. And yet I shouldn't be wanting bad things to happen to a character simply because he's stupid. It's just that Elmer specifically has those bad things coming. Inarguably.

I take solace in the fact that he relationship with his mom suggests he's also a bad and damaged person. That's something. 3 stars.

Daffy Traffic Cop Stop: Lions:

Another groaner. 2 1/2 stars.

Miner Threat:

I was bored. Also the ending was unusually underwhelming, especially since they sort of gave us a neat twist and then utterly chickened out about it. 1 star.

Episode Overall: 2 stars.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Fowl Ploy / Sword Loser"

Spoiler

Fowl Ploy:

In this cartoon, I actually feel bad about Elmer's dumbness. Daffy's pranks are too mean here.

I like the design and animation on the gorilla.

On the subject or Eric Bauza, his Granny Elmer voice sounds nothing like any of his other voices, least of all Daffy. The guy has a knack to him.

Pretty good. 3 1/2 stars.

Sword Loser:

Not a popular time to be a king.

Bugs' closing joke was a groaner, but they all seem to be on this show. 2 1/2 stars.

Episode Overall: 3 stars.

ThunderCats Ultimates! Wish List: Safari Joe, Turmagar, Tuska Warrior, Topspinner, Ram-Bam, Cruncher, Red-Eye, Tug-Mug, Driller, Ro-Bear Belle, Ro-Bear Bert, Nayda, Mumm-Rana, Dr. Dometone, Stinger, Captain Bragg & Crowman, Astral Moat Monster, Spidera, Snowmeow, Wolfrat.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Ring Master Disaster / Put The Cat Out: Eyeball / Pain Event"

Spoiler

Ring Master Disaster:

I liked Bugs putting the hoop in the lion's mouth and getting Sam to jump through it.

Sam's raspberries were funny too. 3 1/2 stars.

Put The Cat Out: Eyeball:

Awful. That made me cringe.

Also I will never forgive the fact that Porky is such a bad pet owner he puts the cat out when it's below freezing during the winter. Everything about this cartoon sucked, premise included. 0.

Pain Event:

Well, on the plus side, they didn't draw Porky with those creepy nipples modern animators often give him.

Porky asking if he and Daffy were friends was brilliant and the right question. And especially funny because he probably should have first asked it 70 years ago (give or take). It's that obvious and important a question, and it seems like an oversight that this is the first time it's come up. 4 stars.

Episode Overall: 3 1/2 stars.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Drum Schtick! / Bugs Hole Gags 2: Frisbee / Beast A-Birdin'"

Spoiler

Drum Schtick!:

Much of the episode was entirely predictable, so I didn't find it all that funny.

That being said, the scat section was cute, and I didn't see Daffy being killed at the end coming. That was new. 3 1/2 stars.

Bugs Hole Gags 2: Frisbee:

Dull. 2 stars.

Beast A Birdin':

I loved Sylvester's meltdown at the beginning. Sylvester's expressions and Jeff Bergman's performance in general were excellent.

For the record, it's never been about Tweety. Sylvester is so pathetic can can't even catch a single bird in an aviary. Tweety is the least of this born loser's failings. 4 stars.

Episode Overall: 4 stars.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Blunder Arrest / Telephone Pole Gag: Airplane Stairs / Cymbal Minded"

Spoiler

Blunder Arrest:

Interesting that Looney Tunes made an episode where Elmer becomes a cop relatively bland and not overtly offensive in 2022. Walked that tightrope well, mostly by using dated notions of police.

This might be the first Looney Tunes ever where the turtles are working FOR Bugs for once.

That silly wabbit thinks he's smarter than Elmer because he is. Although if we're being brutally honest, that specific thing is no brag. 4 stars.

Telephone Pole Gag: Airplane Stairs:

Were the hands of the Pilot supposed to be Sulley's? 3 1/2 stars.

Cymbal Minded:

Mischief during a classical music concerto is a Looney Tunes staple. I really liked the character animation on both Daffy and Elmer in the short. Although I think the ending was probably a little too dark, even for this specific franchise. 4 stars.

Episode Overall: 4 stars.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Hook Line And Stinker! / Balloon Salesman: Everything Pops / Don't Treadmill On Me"

Spoiler

Hook, Line And Stinker!:

Bugs as the mermaid was creepy. 2 1/2 stars.

Balloon Salesman: Everything Pops:

Creative. 3 1/2 stars.

Don't Treadmill On Me:

I was a little bored with this. 2 1/2 stars.

Episode Overall: 2 1/2 stars.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Stained By Me / Pilgwim's Pwogress"

Spoiler

Stained By Me:

That did not work. The problem with seeing Porky so brutally tortured and abused by Daffy is that as a character, Porky doesn't deserve it. So it's not funny, it's mean. 2 stars.

Pilgwim's Pwogress:

Do kids even know who John Wayne is anymore? Just askin'. 3 stars.

Episode Overall: 2 1/2 stars.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Hide Out Hare / Daffy Magician: An Ordinary Mop"

Spoiler

Hide Out Hare:

Utterly predictable, but truthfully not without its charms. Rocko and Mugsy are always good for a laugh. 4 stars.

Daffy Magician: An Ordinary Mop:

A groaner. 3 1/2 stars.

Episode Overall: 4 stars.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Booby Prize / End Of The Leash Gags: Pea Shooter / Balloon Salesman: Porky's Head"

Spoiler

Booby Prize:

Daffy has friends in high places.

Daffy was very funny and expressive this episode. I liked his card trick.

This outdoor outing reminds me that this show has yet to do a Bugs Vs. Daffy cartoon. What are they waiting for? It's Duck season! No, Wabbit season! Guns would probably help. Can't believe I just said that. 4 stars.

End Of The Leash Gag: Pea Shooter:

I have always hated Foghorn Leghorn, and I suspect my disdain is shared by the current producers. In the modern Looney Tunes Cartoons, so far as least, Foghorn hasn't gotten the best of Barnyard Dawg even ONCE. They used to be fairly evenly matched, but the present day writers seem to correctly surmise it's more fun watching the loud-mouthed know-it-all painfully punished. Who knew? 4 stars.

Balloon Salesman: Porky's Head:

I was very glad that even though Porky mentioned his nephew, Cicero did NOT actually appear. I hate that little sociopath. 3 stars.

Episode Overall: 4 stars.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Grand Canyon Canary / Hole In Dumb"

Spoiler

Grand Canyon Canary:

First Tweety cartoon this season.

Granny doesn't own Sylvester in this one.

I liked Tweety's urban version of Home On The Range.

Granny talking about the Circle of Life was funny too.

A good one. 4 1/2 stars.

Hole In Dumb:

The backwards "b" at the end of the title makes it look like the title card is reading "Hole In Dung".

The caddie looks like he could have been designed by John Kricfalusi. I can't decide if I'm complimenting the show there or not.

I love the "club sand wedge" bits.

Also funny. Strong episode all around. 4 1/2 stars.

Episode Overall: 4 1/2 stars.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Funeral For A Fudd / Love Goat"

Spoiler

Funeral For A Fudd:

Whoa, did Elmer actually win this one? That's what the ending looked like to me.

Elmer's stupidity was getting annoying. He confuses Bugs for his own mother and a mirror for his dead body. Calling him a maroon is way too kind.

For the record, the gun being missing here is the one episode this year I missed it, and noticed it was gone. The axe does not have the same subtext for a hunter. I don't actually blame the cartoons for this. I blame society. Gun culture is why we aren't allowed to have nice things.

Speaking of which, I was amused at Bugs's reactions to his death performance at the beginning and the dummy. Bugs doesn't tend to break character around his enemies, but in private we got some insights into what he's thinking with the "Oh brother...". When he see the dummy the look he gives is a cross between "Can you believe this guy?" and "See what I have to put up with?". If Bugs were on The Office he'd be the guy rolling his eyes and smirking at the camera.

I feel conflicted about Elmer's win. Part of me feels it's overdue, and the other part wishes it didn't happen in an episode where he's stupider than he's ever been. Lucky devil. Literally. 3 1/2 stars.

Love Goat:

I agree with Daffy that he's insane, but I disagree that it's besides the point.

First time on the show Porky and Petunia appear in the same cartoon. It's weird that is so, but this confirms they are a steady item.

A little bit of Daffy goes a long way. In hindsight, this has not been the best show to binge this Daffy-heavy season. 2 1/2 stars.

Episode Overall: 3 stars.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Practical Jerk / Bottoms Up"

Spoiler

Practical Jerk:

There were elements of that I strongly disliked, but I'm still giving the cartoon five stars. It was surprisingly clever, especially for such a weak premise.

And yes, the premise is weak. I am very much with Porky Pig in hating April Fool's Day (especially on the internet) because nobody knows how to work it right. Nowadays it's basically people just starting a thread or an article on a website with a crazy clickbait title, and then saying April Fools when you click on it, as if you were actually tricked, and they aren't really the dumbest and most annoying person ever. It's SO freaking tiresome. It is literally the worst holiday of the entire year. I think it's a comedy black hole. Maybe not as bad as The Aristocrats joke. But talented people can make that joke funny. I haven't seen a worthwhile April Fool's prank in years, literally over a decade. It's not just a comedy black hole, it's a comedy dead end.

Something tells me Dat Phan is really into the holiday. Just a feeling.

But I thought the episode was clever. And while none of the April Fools bits surprised me, I loved how it turned into an independent movie at the end. I'm not saying I'd never have expected to see that in a Looney Tunes cartoon, but that's more up the alley of Animaniacs. The only Bugs Bunny project I think it would fit comfortably is The Looney Tunes Show. The idea that Porky was born in 1933 was funny because it means he's 89. And that's why the end, although expected, is brilliant. When Daffy rips off the old man disguise he's affirming these characters are ageless. Which is how they should be. And say what you will about the old cartoons, I don't think they quite understood this. There were a couple of flashforward cartoons that I think violated the spirit of that idea the way this one embraces it. And it's cool that it does. And it's my favorite cartoon of the season for that. 5 stars.

Bottoms Up:

I'm calling this one a loss for a couple of reasons. First off, the ending of Bugs and Pete eating themselves is stupid. It's a non-ending. Looney Tunes is famous for never coming up with good endings, so when I object to this one, I want to be clear how unusually bad it is. I can tolerate a lot of bad endings in the franchise. I've pretty much had to. Great endings like the previous cartoon are an aberration, not the norm.

The other objection is a something I guess I need to level against the old shorts too. I think Pete Puma is TOO dumb. I'm not saying Bugs is ever really evenly matched against his enemies, but Pete's gentle demeanor suggests Bugs is essentially ragging on a mentally challenged person. And yeah, you can say the same thing about Beaky Buzzard, but I think Beaky is kind of an ahole, and has it coming on some level. Yeah, Pete is trying to eat Bugs. But you wouldn't know it by his slow and calm demeanor. He and Bugs are not a fair match and it feels mean.

Finally, I'll add a couple of extra notes about this season. This season was far too Daffy-heavy. Bugs and Daffy need to share a cartoon as rivals. And Taz didn't appear at all (and neither did Marvin), and we also didn't get a single Roadrunner cartoon. I felt the earlier seasons of this show were a bit hit and miss, but we had way more variety in them. Sylvester only appears twice in a main short, and with Tweety only once. It feels like these specific ten episodes have the show in a rut. Hopefully, the next batch will be more varied. But I miss the days we could see a cartoon with Hubert and Bertie or Charlie the Dog. **.

Episode Overall: 3 1/2 stars.

ThunderCats Ultimates! Wish List: Safari Joe, Turmagar, Tuska Warrior, Topspinner, Ram-Bam, Cruncher, Red-Eye, Tug-Mug, Driller, Ro-Bear Belle, Ro-Bear Bert, Nayda, Mumm-Rana, Dr. Dometone, Stinger, Captain Bragg & Crowman, Astral Moat Monster, Spidera, Snowmeow, Wolfrat.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Valentine's Extwavaganza: Duck Chocolate / Daffy Traffic Cop Stop: Lead Foot / Bunny And The Beast"

Spoiler

Duck Chocolate:

Daffy is obnoxious. Petunia is a total idiot.

Helpful for the show to label the brown lump on Daffy's finger chocolate. I had just assumed he was a bad wiper. 2 1/2 stars.

Daffy Traffic Cop Stop: Lead Foot:

Gross and creepy. 1 1/2 stars.

Bunny And The Beast:

From the episode description, I had hoped Kristen Wiig as Lola was returning. No such luck.

I like that the ape grew on Bugs and he embraced the romance by the end. The rebound was funny too.

Where did the ape get the books in her cave? I'm overthinking things again, aren't I?

Solid. 4 stars.

Episode Overall: 3 stars.

ThunderCats Ultimates! Wish List: Safari Joe, Turmagar, Tuska Warrior, Topspinner, Ram-Bam, Cruncher, Red-Eye, Tug-Mug, Driller, Ro-Bear Belle, Ro-Bear Bert, Nayda, Mumm-Rana, Dr. Dometone, Stinger, Captain Bragg & Crowman, Astral Moat Monster, Spidera, Snowmeow, Wolfrat.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Bugs Bunny's Howl-O-Skreem Spooktacula"

Spoiler

Graveyard Goofs

I knew it was gonna be a TV in the coffin.

The dancing skeletons and ghost were very old-school. Great animation there.

I like the way the Grim Reaper says "T'weren't nuthin'."

Funny (ish). 4 stars.

Hex Appeal

I like that they used a different animation style for this. It has a very 1960's feel, especially the colors going outside of the lines and the drawn backgrounds.

The spider is super cute.

I like that there's a bone sticking out of Hazel's nose at the end.

I hope the show does more shorts with lesser characters. Last season sort of overdosed on Bugs, Porky, and Daffy. 4 stars.

Inn For Trouble

The Killer had a great character design, and Sylvester's reaction shots were well-animated too. I also like Porky's clueless puns at the end. 3 1/2 stars.

Mummy Dummy

The stuff at the "buffet" was super gross, and the Mummy seeming to break all of Bugs' bones was truly horrific.

Also should note that Bugs says "What a rip." That isn't what he would have said in the old shorts.

The weakest of the cartoons. 2 1/2 stars.

Episode Overall: 3 1/2 stars.

ThunderCats Ultimates! Wish List: Safari Joe, Turmagar, Tuska Warrior, Topspinner, Ram-Bam, Cruncher, Red-Eye, Tug-Mug, Driller, Ro-Bear Belle, Ro-Bear Bert, Nayda, Mumm-Rana, Dr. Dometone, Stinger, Captain Bragg & Crowman, Astral Moat Monster, Spidera, Snowmeow, Wolfrat.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Skyscraper Scrap / Balloon Salesman: Feeling Down / The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea"

Spoiler

Skyscraper Scrap

I loved it. Ingenious use of a classical waltz and no dialogue. The animation and character expressions have to do all the work, and since they are great, the cartoon works like gangbusters. 5 stars.

Balloon Salesman: Feeling Down

Don't love these. 2 1/2 stars.

The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea

Awful. Aside from the nonending existing because the writers weren't good enough at their jobs to think of a good one, I think Fred Tatasciore sounds ALL wrong for Taz. They should have kept Jim Cummings if you ask me (although few people do). 1 1/2 stars.

Episode Overall: 3 1/2 stars.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Crumb And Get It / Bugs Hole Gags 2: Mini Bugs / Construction Obstruction"

Spoiler

Crumb And Get It

Those old 60's Seven Arts cartoons sure had weird animation. Almost wish they had done the entire episode in this style. Better yet, I wish they had brought back Cool Cat and Bunny and Claude instead.

Still, although Daffy IS still a bit loony, they DID sort of bring back his hapless selfish persona from the 1960's as a tribute to the era. 4 stars.

Bugs Hole Gags 2: Mini Bugs

They must be Liliputting us on. 3 1/2 stars.

Construction Obstruction

For a short supposedly taking shots at both gentrification and Trump, the cartoon feels mildly toothless. I think the most cutting gag is actually Bugs declaring his land being stolen Unamerican. And then wondering if that's actually the most American thing ever. Would that the rest of the satire were as sharp as that. 2 1/2 stars.

Episode Overall: 3 stars.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Yosemite Samurai / Bugs Hole Gags 2: Bees Nest / Dummies In The Dark"

Spoiler

Yosemite Samurai

Weak sauce, man. Lousy. Although to be brutally honest, if Bugs Bunny's current voice actor wasn't Asian, I might have found it offensive instead. 2 stars.

Bugs Hole Gags 2: Bees Nest

Funny? Ish? 3 stars.

Dummies In The Dark

Great visuals on this one. Some new, neat, and creative uses for the ol' "eyeballs in the dark" gags too. 4 stars.

Episode Overall: 3 stars.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Pain Rent / Nest Effort"

Spoiler

Pain Rent

I prefer the cute little kid Gossamer from The Looney Tunes Show. 2 1/2 stars.

Nest Effort

There was some nice animation in Daffy eating that sandwich.

I'll tell you why this show doesn't work for me in 2023. I actually nitpick the logic holes. I was like "If Elmer HAD actually set up a new nest for Daffy this problem would be over". Stuff like this is probably why the show has been struggling to connect to modern audiences, despite being so similar to the old shorts. I think our standards have simply changed. 3 stars.

Episode Overall: 2 1/2 stars.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Feather Of The Bride / Daffy Magician: Pick A Card / Bugs Hole Gags 2: Rattlesnakes"

Spoiler

Feather Of The Bride

I hate Foghorn Leghorn with a passion but it's fun to see him punished.

I liked Miss Prissy's father. "Checkmate, I guess," made me laugh (it was NOT a Looney Tunes line) but I must point out the move was NOT actually a Checkmate. 2 Kings can pretty much only Stalemate each other.

Funny. 3 1/2 stars.

Daffy Magician: Pick A Card

I used to know some cool card tricks as a kid. 3 1/2 stars.

Bugs Hole Gags 2: Rattlesnakes

I was bored with this. 2 stars.

Episode Overall: 3 1/2 stars.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Poolside Pest / Put The Cat Out: Inside Out / Bulls-Eye Bunny"

Spoiler

Poolside Pest

Funny ending. But I think my problem is I don't recall Elmer Fudd being so personally repulsive in the original shorts. He was hapless, and stupid, and on occasion malicious. But he wasn't the same as Yosemite Sam. And the new cartoons seem to think he is.

But still, nice ending. 3 1/2 stars.

Put The Cat Out: Inside Out

Here is another reason the show and concept feels a bit dated. Does anybody actually put their cat out anymore? The show seems to be geared towards young children who were born in the 1940's. It's no wonder it hasn't set the world on-fire with modern kids. 2 stars.

Bulls-Eye Bunny

I appreciated that Bugs never got untied from the Bullseye by the end. Looney Tunes almost never has believably continuity so it was noticed by me. 3 1/2 stars.

Episode Overall: 3 stars.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Auto Birdy Shop / Daffy Traffic Cop Stop: Phone Booth / Eyes Wide Fudd"

Spoiler

Auto Birdy Shop

Y'know, if they had June Foray actin' gangsta and talking street, it might have been funny, simply by virtue of it being Foray. There is no "poor taste" boundary limit testing by having Candi Milo do it. It's lame and cringe instead.

If another actor did Avery Bullock's line on American Dad, it wouldn't actually be funny. He's only funny because of the things the show actually gets Sir Patrick Stewart to say. If there was a certain level of vulnerable bravery in having Foray do this, there might be some fun in it. It's terrible comedy instead without the history Foray brought to the role.

Similarly, I wish Foray had lived to do Space Jam: A New Legacy. Yeah, she would been like 110, but she would have rocked that version. 2 1/2 stars.

Daffy Traffic Cop Stop: Phone Booth

I dislike it because the cartoon physics are totally shoddy. If somebody pitched Chuck Jones the phone booth idea for the Roadrunner he would have sent it right back to the drawing board with the note, "Needs work". 1 star.

Eyes Wide Fudd

Fun Fact. Kind of neat that the guy who did the voice for Opera Daffy directed the episode.

I love the idea that Daffy doesn't understand Elmer's speech impediment either.

I also loved Daffy saying he used his own ink. "Can you believe we're made of this stuff?"

Funny. 3 1/2 stars.

Episode Overall: 3 stars.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Livin' The Daydream / Duck Hunting Gag: Holograms / Fake It 'Til You Bake It"

Spoiler

Livin' The Daydream

Ralph Plillips, huh?

Why is Looney Tunes Cartoons sometimes a GOOD show? Because it will take chances and do an unexpected cartoon like this, using a fringe character and different art style. That has value to me. The real irony is that this specific cartoon isn't actually very good. But I love the show for making it.

And a straight up homage to Batman: The Animated Series? Whatever the cartoon's other faults, I'm not made of freaking stone. 4 stars.

Duck Hunting Gag: Holograms

Meta silliness. We are allowed to show Elmer with the gun. He just has to throw it away before he can shoot it. Standards have changed. You said it, Fudd. 4 1/2 stars.

Fake It 'Til You Bake It

Why is Looney Tunes Cartoons sometimes a BAD show? Because while The Looney Tunes Show took a majorly despised character like Lola Bunny and turned her into the best character out of spite, and just to prove that they could, this show takes a boring character like Petunia, and turns her into the worst character on the show instead. Says everything about both shows' priorities regarding female characters.

You know what? I take that back. Petunia isn't the worst character on this show. Cicero is. Amazingly, both of the worst characters are pigs and Porky-adjacent. He does not bring out the best in his peers.

Ugh. 1 star.

Episode Overall: 2 1/2 stars.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Funny Book / Balloon Salesman: All The Balloons / Kitty Krashers"

Spoiler

Funny Book

"Ain't I An Inker?"

Shows 80 years later Looney Tunes can still do an original high-concept premise with great animation and visual gags. That being said, I can't help but think it's partly a shot at creator driven webcomics. The idea that a novice creator like Fudd's artistic aspirations boil down to narcissism and vanity seems to be a veiled slam at creators without professional training or income. For obvious reasons, I don't dig that bit.

Still pretty amazing though. 4 1/2 stars.

Balloon Salesman

Chuck Jones would be rolling over in his grave. Another cartoon physics failure. Cartoons don't actually need TOO many rules to function, but they DO need SOME. This cartoon is simply badly designed. 1 1/2 stars.

Kitty Krashers

Sylvester didn't actually win at the end, but he did better than most other cartoons he's appeared in over the decades.

Beside Hubert and Bertie, I also caught Sniffles' cameo. I seem to recall him being the worst Looney Tunes character of all time back in the day. Wonder how he'd size up to Petunia now.

Funny. 3 1/2 stars.

Episode Overall: 4 stars.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Birthday Grifts / Daffy Magician: Vintage Porkys / Tub-o-War"

Spoiler

Birthday Grifts

Not feeling it. On the one hand the improvement this has on the old cartoons is that a lot of the violence is more extreme, disturbing, shocking, and funnier. The problem is the writing is lazy. Nobody minded that in the old cartoons, but I mean Bugs apparently spent a fortune on a new car, house and yacht just to trick Elmer into going to a nuclear test site to kill him. Great investment there, Bugs.

Wouldn't it simply have been easier (and cheaper) to plan the nice party he promised instead? Why am I supposed to think of him spending a fortune to kill this clear loser is some sort of karmic victory? It makes no sense.

Sorry, I have higher standards that this show is not meeting. 1 1/2 stars.

Daffy Magician: Vintage Porkys

This short however is a keeper. Wonderful to see all the classic Porky styles. The only character with a more pronounced design evolution than him is Elmer / Egghead. 5 stars.

Tub-o-War

I was all set to like this. And then I didn't. Which is totally on brand for how disappointing this show is.

I thought Marvin the Martian giving K-9 a bath would have been great comedy. What I loved about the idea the most is it's not a premise that EVER would have occurred to the original creators, so the show had a RARE opportunity to actually one-up Chuck Jones and Friz Freleng. And it turns out the cartoon isn't even about that.

I love that the show Duck Dodger played up the similarities between Marvin and K-9 and Mickey and Pluto more than once. We finally could have seen a REAL tribute to that, and it's stupid nonsense instead. That's what kills me. The show doesn't HAVE to be underwhelming. It is on purpose. I think it thinks because the stories of the old shorts were basic and lacked any sort of nuance, that's what modern audiences crave. And that's the show entirely misreading why we love the old shorts. We love them in spite of the fact that the writing is lazy and often stupid. Not BECAUSE of it. It feels like this show is paying tribute to the wrong things.

Disappointing. That could have been a great cartoon. The premise that was promised certainly was. It's comedy malpractice they didn't actually deliver. 1 star.

Episode Overall: 2 stars.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Oregon Fail / Duck Hunting Gag: Duck Call / Life's A Beach"
Spoiler

Good meta moment: Pointing out that the 100,000 dollar pricetag was actually ridiculous and unfeasable in the 1800's.

Bad meta moment: Bugs pointing out electricity hasn't been invented yet. That is like the laziest joke a cartoon set in the past could make. Maybe if this were the first cartoon to ever make that joke, fine (the 100 grand joke was all right because although Austin Powers has poked fun at the value of currencies in different time periods, it's never done it exactly that way). But it's old-hat and cliche instead.

So-so cartoon. 3 stars.

Duck Hunting Gag: Duck Call

I saw the Monty Python Foot ending coming a mile away, but it was the right ending, so I won't raise a stink over it. 4 stars.

Life's A Beach

I squealed in excitement! A Three Bears cartoon!

It was a travesty. Every inch of it felt it wrong. Why?

Family Guy did a joke about that because Jim Henson died young of a treatable illness, now we have "wrong-sounding Muppets". That's what the Three Bears currently are: Wrong-sounding Muppets. There is no getting over the fact that their voices sound off. You can live with different interpretations of Bugs and Daffy because their actors have years for you to get used to it. Because this is the first Three Bears cartoon in decades, everybody sounds completely wrong.

I will also point out that the animation is weirdly MUCH better than it was in those cartoons. That's not something I ought to take points off of for, but it's another reason this doesn't fit in with the other Three Bears shorts in any way, shape or form.

Also, seeing the Three Bears in a moderns lens puts them in a different light for me. It's not Pa having to put up with his annoying family. If you ask me, Pa is actually the entire problem. Yeah, Junior's dumb, and Ma has her head in the clouds. But neither of those things should provoke his level of rage of having him ask what he did to deserve this family, and for him to mimic a suicide over it. If anything, Ma and Junior should be lamenting what they did to deserve HIM.

That was wrong. Wocka, wocka, who wants to hear some funny-ass jokes? 1 star.

Episode Overall: 2 1/2 stars.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Pearl Of My Dreams / Bugs Hole Gag 2: Down The Drain / Mech-A-Mess"
Spoiler

Pearl Of My Dreams

That was a great disgusted expression they gave Daffy as he's turning the air pump crank. Worked like gangbusters.

I also liked "balo-balo-balo-shenanigans." It's always SO weird what words Porky's stutter can overcome. 4 stars.

Bugs Hole Gag 2: Down The Drain

Nothing special. But nothing terrible either. Middling. 3 stars.

Mech-A-Mess

Admittedly, Chuck Jones never did THIS one. Iron Man movies were a bit after his time.

I liked the drawing of "Iron Suit" in the comic book two. Real expressive.

And we get an X-Files reference at the end? In Looney Tunes? Just why the hell not? I won't tell if you don't. 4 stars.

Episode Overall: 4 stars.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Boarding Games / Put The Cat Our: Paintings / Winter Hungerland"

Spoiler

Boarding Games

Marc Anthony and Pussy Foot? Those are some Looney Tunes Deep Cuts.

I love that Marc loves and wants to protect Pussy Foot. I do too. Is that from the original cartoons? It's an original and refreshing idea.

I noticed Sam the Sheepdog in the prison kennel as well as a dog that look suspiciously like Rover Dangerfield.

Ultra rare Looney Tunes with a happy ending. Yay! Cute! 5 stars.

Put The Cat Out: Paintings

Meh. 2 1/2 stars.

Winter Hungerland

Sam and Ralph! I love that both cartoons in this episode featured lesser known or used characters. I wish the earlier seasons did this more.

It's weird but decades later the time card bit and Sam and Ralph being friends who like each other off-duty never gets old. For some reason, the office politics nature of it makes it feel like the one Looney Tunes bit that holds up in the modern era.

Not exactly a HAPPY ending this time out, per se, but at least a NICE one. That counts as a victory too, I guess. 4 1/2 stars.

Episode Overall: 4 1/2 stars.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Tweet Suite / Daffy Magician: Cut In Half / Desert Menu"

Spoiler

Tweet Suite:

Honestly? That ending was WAY too dark. 2 stars.

Daffy Magician: Cut In Half

The best Looney Tunes add an element of, if not realism, than credibility, to their slapstick stuff. It's why Chuck Jones' Roadrunner cartoons were so effective and funny. This? It's stupid ill-thought out nonsense. Not digging it. Remotely. 2 stars.

Desert Menu

I love this Beaky Buzzard! He's smarter than he used to be, says funny, weirdly observational things, and his facial expressions animate like crazy. Very cool. 4 stars.

Episode Overall: 3 stars.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Abducted Bunny / Daffy Psychic: A New Job / Duck Hunting Gag: Decoy / Daffy Magician: Skeleton"

Spoiler

Abducted Bunny

I appreciate that the show isn't under the same restrictions the old cartoons were. The gushing blood joke can be described and it's funny. That being said, the ending is too dark and violent. I appreciate this has more freedom than the classic shorts. But that goes too far.

I love Bugs actually apologizing to Marvin because brain extractors make him nervous.

The animation on the abduction at the beginning was freaking tight! Sweet!

A little much, by the end. 3 stars.

Daffy Psychic: A New Job

The angry husband can't tell the difference between a duck and a pig? Really? I HATE crap like that. 1 star.

Duck Hunting Gag: Decoy

We can still SEE the gun, even if Elmer can't use it for the reasons described. 3 stars.

Daffy Magician: Skeleton

I'd be inclined to call this one too dark too, but the talking skeleton at the end struck me as weird instead. 2 1/2 stars.

Episode Overall: 3 stars.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Feline Lucky / Prickly Pair"

Spoiler

The comedy didn't work. It felt a little too obvious and cliched.

That being said, I liked the twist ending that Granny's lucky pet was actually a vicious Rottweiler. Who now owns Sylvester for some reason. Oh, well. I guess we all currently live in Hell. 3 stars.

Prickly Pair

I love the return of Beaky's Italian mother.

On Rocko's Modern Life, Spunky the dog once fell in love with a mop. Here Beaky falls in love with a cactus. Spunky has better taste in women.

The flexing moment was funnier than it had any right to be.

Hey, Beaky, there are women in the 1940's who believe the love song you are crooning is way too square. Oftentimes I see the old-timey gags on this show and am like "Who is this actually for?"

I mentioned the cartoons are more permissive. Aside from the fact that they'd never be able to get away with this specific premise before now, even if it somehow slipped by Leon Schlesinger, after the kiss, there is NO way there would be cactus spines on Beaky's tongue. Thank you TV-PG ratings on streaming! That's actually funny. 4 1/2 stars.

Episode Overall: 4 stars.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Wrong With The Wind / Daffy Magician: Pigs Feet / Moody At The Movies"

Spoiler

Wrong With The Wind

This cartoon didn't interest me much but I liked the happy ending with Daffy and Porky. Hella rare for that. 3 stars.

Daffy Magician: Pigs Feet

Dark, man. Dark. 2 1/2 stars.

Moody At The Movies

All right! Another crack at the Three Bears! Let's see if I can get used to the new voices yet!

Baby is all right, but Ma and Pa are still 100% wrong-sounding Muppets. Personally, I blame Jim Henson's wait-and-see attitude. 1 star.

Episode Overall: 2 1/2 stars.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Boardwalk Bunny / Duck Hunting Gag: Crossbow / Cat Fished"

Spoiler

Boardwalk Bunny

It's interesting, that with perhaps the exception of the hammer bit at the end, none of Bugs' victories against Sam were due to maliciousness on Bugs' end for once. Either Sam defeated himself, or karma itself took a firmer hand against what he was doing. Bugs' role was was unusually passive.

Interesting. 3 stars.

Duck Hunting Gag: Crossbow

Loved Daffy's :"What'd I miss?" Dude should be in Hamilton. 4 stars.

Cat Fished

So this is apparently the stupidest freaking thing I have ever seen.

And Granny in the negligee? Does this show actually WANT me to hate it? Because I'm getting there.

I find it SO weird that Granny doesn't actually own Sylvester on this show. It's makes the dynamics less confusing and less interesting to make Granny and Tweety purely the good guys and Sylvester purely the bad guy.

Stolen valor, Sly? Rhymes with slick move.

God, every inch of that cartoon was repulsive. Bad place to leave the "season" off at. 0.

Episode Overall: 2 stars.

Looney Tunes Cartoons "Daffy In Wackyland"

Spoiler

Great stop-motion, and wacky designs and visuals. But truly the weirdest thing is seeing a Duck trying to eat an egg. 5 stars.
