Pacific Rim: The Black "bOy"

Spoiler

The recap was very helpful. I forgot nearly every detail of this show.

I liked Mei simply shooting the Tick off Boy. Staples. That was easy.

Interesting. 3 stars.

Pacific Rim: The Black "The Never Never"

Spoiler

To be honest, I would have found it FAR more interesting if the crazy guy HAD managed to tame Kaiju. The problem is I suspect if that was the producers' intention, Del Toro probably nixed it himself. The notion is interesting in a serialized cartoon, but would really confuse things for the movie series. Not saying there'll ever be another film, but Del Toro would not want such a big and gamechanging plot turn to occur in a tie-in cartoon.

The ending was pretty cool too. 3 1/2 stars.

Pacific Rim: The Black "Divide"

Spoiler

That ending was not at all good for our heroes, but on the other hand it will make the journey to the series finale MUCH easier.

I liked the controversies the episode set up because I could tell there were actually no good options. Taylor, Hayley, and Mei's plan ALL sucked equally and would never work. But one of them needed to be chosen and Taylor unilaterally deciding it was his means he's the one who is going to face the blowback. What gets me about each bad plan is how diametrically opposed they are with each other, and also how damn sure each character is theirs is the correct way. That's great drama and not forced drama in the least. I approve.

Getting good. ****1/2.

Pacific Rim: The Black "Sisters Of The Kaiju"

Spoiler

Spooky goings-on here.

Weird to see Shane of all characters being given the big self-sacrificing hero role. He was pretty much portrayed as a sociopath last year.

Interesting happenings. 4 stars.

Pacific Rim: The Black "Mind, Body, Soul"

Spoiler

Big stakes and the show is playing for keeps as it winds up. But I'm still a little iffy on the supernatural elements being added to the franchise.

The guy who plays Spider has an interesting voice.

I really liked the guy shooting the trigger happy woman in the head. She was dumb and gonna get them all killed. Shane may be dead but somebody needed to be in charge. That was the right (and most awful) move.

I must see how this ends. 4 stars.

Pacific Rim: The Black "The Twilight Run"

Spoiler

Brina's death was sad, poetic, and fit in thematically with everything else. Well done.

Apex did NOT go out pretty.

Loa's story of guilt was both fascinating and riveting. Proving once and for all, that yes, simple conversations can work in animation.

Wondering how they can wrap this up in 25 minutes. 4 stars.

Pacific Rim: The Black "Final Approach"

Spoiler

Big sacrifices and not everybody making it (as well as bittersweet endings) are totally consistent with both films. The series ended right.

I love that the High Priestess' last words are, "Such crimes against the new order deserve the most severe of punishments." And Boy proves her right. But not in the way she expects.

I thought it was a solid ending. The series was shaky in the first part, but it found its way and voice by the end. 4 1/2 stars.
