Robocop 3
It's the kind of bad movie whose badness more often amused me rather than offended me.
Make no mistake: There is plenty to be offended by. The suicides being played as jokes are especially tasteless. The screenplay is atrocious, and the acting is somehow even worse. The notion of the incorruptible cops resigning over their principles is laughable in 2024.
But I laughed a couple of times. I like that the film was concerned with Murphy's humanity and his arc (which the second film couldn't be bothered to do).
People complain that the PG-13 rating was done to make things more family friendly, which is a dubious complaint because I don't see anything appropriate for kids in the movie. Of course I think that about a LOT of movies in the 1980's and 90's geared towards kids, so maybe I'm wrong.
Is that Jeff Garlin as the donut shop guy? Everyone has their share of early career embarrassments, I guess.
What I WILL say is the PG-13 rating doesn't inherently make the quality worse. It's not either good or bad. And I think people who complain about PG-13 ratings for franchises that are usually are R-rated are worried about the wrong things. Granted, this movie sucks. But that's not because there's less gore and f bombs.
An awful movie. That I couldn't really work up the bother to be angered by. 1 1/2 stars.
