Bat-Fam "Game Knight"

The animation style is atrocious. The Merry Little Batman continuity is so much fun but I’ll never be able to get over that.

I mean, in this Universe, Batman is a hugger! Who doesn’t want that?

Weird that Ra’s Al Ghul and Man-Bat randomly hang around the mansion.

Good things? 22 minute kiddie cartoon! An actual main title! The theme reminds me of The Addams Family and Scooby Doo.

I want to like this show so badly but it’s SO freaking ugly. 3 stars.

Bat-Fam "Bat-Trip"

It’s SO cool Two-Face reformed. That’s all I ever wanted for the version from Batman: The Animated Series.

Ugly designs or not, this is a very KIND DC continuity. I love that fact. 3 1/2 stars.

Bat-Fam "90 Is The New 80"

James Cromwell is VERY good as Alfred.

The fight between Batman and Bright at the end was great.

I love that Sad Hatter is rooting for the BAT-FAM.

I wish a show this fun looked better. 3 1/2 stars.

Bat-Fam "All In A Bat's Day's Work"

The Clayface design is amusing but kind of cruddy. But he animates amazingly. I’ll go so far as to call it the best animation on Clayface’s morphs ever.

I like that the chair is everything Claire was hoping it would be.

I love E Vil and that Rad Hatter is reforming.

Laughed at Clayface exclaiming, “Matches Malone is Batman!” SO close!

Enjoyed that. 4 stars.

Bat-Fam "A Knight At The Movies"

That Killer Croc is hideous.

Amazed Dr. Light reformed in this continuity. In many he’s pretty much a monster.

Didn’t see Alicia being Bright coming, mostly because I didn’t think it was something to watch out for.

Easily one of the worst Commissioner Gordons of all time. The ones from “Harley Quinn” and “Gotham” are still worse, but I dunno, it’s close.

Liked some of it, disliked some. 3 stars.

Bat-Fam "The Art Of Claire"

I loved Claire’s painting at the end. I also love that she’s unsure of Caitlin until she sees the Wayne Family plaque. That brings home who her real family is.

It almost ANGERS me how likable Damien Wayne is on this show. How fucking hard is this? I really don’t understand DC Comics at ALL.

Solid. 3 1/2 stars.

Bat-Fam "Manbatman"

Man-Bat is super funny. He was an anti-hero in the 1990’s.

I don’t understand the logic of keeping the mission secret from Damian. The fact that it doesn’t actually make any sense which is why I don’t believe it.

Another one of those episodes that is good in some places and bad in others. 3 stars.

Bat-Fam "An Interview With A Batman"

Bruce is kind of a cretin during the entire episode. 2 1/2 stars.

Bat-Fam "April Fools! Part 1"

Horrific ending. Very Batman Beyond: Return Of The Joker.

Bruce continues to do nothing right.

I love Man-Bat digging beds. Have you guys tried this?

Damian being so mad he refuses to yell at Bruce is very relatable. Bruce does not get to dictate the terms of how he is forgiven.

Pretty good part 1 to the finale. 4 stars.

Bat-Fam "April Fools! Part 2"

I felt it was kind of weak for a finale (the dream sequence opening didn’t help) but I DID like the fact that Damian was playing a con on the Joker the entire time, and was never brainwashed. And the last shot makes it clear Ra’s is part of the BAT-FAM, whether they like it or not. 3 stars.

Aztec Batman: Clash Of Empires

That felt like a bit of a bait-and-switch.

I mean, it's not Batman. It does the tropes, but it's not Batman. Batman Ninja was Batman sent to feudal Japan. But it was still Batman. Batman: Gotham By Gaslight and Batman: The Doom That Came To Gotham were both set in different time periods. But they're still Batman. This is not Batman.

Is it any good anyways?

I didn't much like it. It dealt with too many superstitious characters and their stupid reactions to things. That might even be okay if the message is that shit is actually nonsense, but the film does its fair share of feeding into that nonsense itself. The moral isn't "Superstitions are for fools." It's "They were obviously worshiping the wrong Gods." Don't dig the latter message.

I will say this. I like the animation style. It felt clean. Not enough DC cartoons look and feel as clean as this did.

But all in all, I was disappointed. And considering how long the movie took to make I don't think I should have been. 2 1/2 stars.

Watchmen: Chapter II

I'm not sold. I spent the first review doubting whether an adaptation was even necessary, and I don't think it was. I think the main thing I got from Part II is it's a lesser film than the first. Those pacing issues that plague these DC Universe films that seemed absent from the first? They are back. Big time. And maybe the truth is I gave the first film more credit for that than it deserved. Possibly Dr. Manhattan's monologues there were exactly as slow and monotonous, and I simply hadn't gotten properly sick of them yet. But I have now.

One of the things I liked about the first part is Rorschach is a VERY indefensible character there. The second part is weaker for actually defending him.

The thing that kills me about the master plan from the World's Smartest Man is that it's so fucking stupid, but in a Universe this fucking stupid, only fucking stupid works. Something that dumb should never work. And it does. And that pisses me off.

Dr. Manhattan is probably the most useless superhero in all of fiction. The only notable action he took in both parts is murdering Rorschach at the end here, and despite what the heroes think, and despite the fact that I hate Rorschach, it's the wrong move. So yeah, I'm tired of listening to this naked blue guy's bullshit when the only action of consequence in this war threatening-situation he got off his lazy bare ass to make was a mistake. I'm SO over that asshole.

I found Nite-Owl and Silk Spectre's romance not very interesting (it's the impotence thing that strikes me as unnecessary) but I loved her scene with her mother at the end refusing to blame her for who her father really was. It was a nice scene in a movie devoid of them.

My favorite bit was Ozymandias revealing at the end, "Nope, it's too late already. You'd think I'd tell you everything if there was ANY chance you could stop it?" I dispute this is the World's Smartest Man. But he's smarter than Lex Luthor at any rate.

The animation and pacing are off, but the voicework is pretty damn great. I don't recall stronger voice performances in ANY recent DC Universe films of this era. Still, the movie doesn't feel entirely right.

Alan Moore is right about everything. Including the fact that the comic should have just been left alone. I think the recent TV show had its virtues for being an original story, but it feels like adapting an already perfectly told story is a bad idea. The trailer to this comic-accurate film can honestly say "This is almost EXACTLY like your favorite comic book story of all time! It just happens to be minorly worse in every single respect!" I don't think that makes it a thing worth adapting. I feel the same about Disney live-action remakes, but at least there, I'm not alone in thinking that. I think people ought to demand DC keeps its hands off Watchmen. No more adaptations, sequels, or prequels. I don't think they are adding anything, or improving on the original work in any way. Plus, all it does is piss Alan Moore off, and how many times must that man be proven right before DC stops treating him like utter shit? Alan Moore is pretty much comic bookdom's Cassandra. He speaks nothing but the truth about how shitty things are in the industry, and nobody ever listens to him. People talk shit about the comics industry all the time. But Moore's harsh critiques go beyond terrible work practices, and cast doubt on the very notion of fandom itself. And maybe the guy who created the wrongly-beloved Rorschach to be despised can talk a little bit more accurately over how foolish fandom is towards comics with a credibility few other creators posses.

This should not be happening. 3 stars.

I liked it so far.

The animation looks surprisingly great and it's very interesting that even though Batman distrusts Lex Luthor, Luthor himself behaves like a hero and even defends Superman. Very interesting idea.

This is promising, even if I won't be using the interactive bits. 4 stars.
