Hit-Monkey "Return To Sender"

We can say f-bombs now for some reason.

Interesting that after its death the giant cat becomes a regular-sized cat.

The "This Season" preview was kind of awesome.

Very glad this show was renewed. 4 stars.

Hit-Monkey "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner?"

VERY violent.

I thought it was very interesting how legit angry Bryce was at Monkey after the Iris incident. I actually don't blame him. That HAD to hurt.

Pretty good. 3 1/2 stars.

Hit-Monkey "The Rope"

The 48 hours on and off body for Bryce is an EXTREMELY great high-concept. Lot of different wrinkles they can add. Like sleep taking a huge chunk out of that time. A lot of interesting ideas can be formed there. It's a great conceit.

The group of former assassins is LESS great, but in fairness it could lead to interesting places. We'll just have to see.

The ending to the episode was just neat. 4 stars.

Hit-Monkey "Never Too Late"

I know he's just a monkey and I know he can't speak, but when he simply accepts the Co-Op's accolades for defeating the Alderman, without ONCE giving the real credit to Bryce, I like him less. And he's just a freaking monkey!

The beginning and ending unexpected pathos is the kind of shit both BoJack Horseman and Moral Orel used to shock us with. Like BoJack, and unlike Orel, this feels entirely earned.

Akiko is the shittiest Lady Bullseye ever.

I thought it was great. 4 stars.

Hit-Monkey "Akiko"

Boone's story is heartbreaking and gives us not just great context for why he's fighting the Aldermen. But also why Akiko is so currently messed up.

Honestly, I see why Monkey prefers the Co-Op to Bryce. Even if they are dodgy.

I love that the opening Akiko flashback / dream sequence's animation recalled a child's drawing. The simplicity to the horrible things happening was very dramatically effective.

Interesting episode. 4 stars.

Hit-Monkey "The Estate"

So here's my question: Why doesn't Haruka just fucking ASK Double-Tap and the Co-Op what happened to her precinct? Maybe that would be a dumb idea under most circumstances, but considering Monkey has JOINED the Co-Op, it strikes me as the most prudent course of action.

Out of all animated cartoons based on Marvel Comics, this one is easily the most cinematic. And it's really not even close. X-Men '97 presents itself as fairly sophisticated there, but it's simply not at this level.

Very cool show. 4 stars.

Hit-Monkey "The Last Supper"

I think it's telling that Haruka rejecting the dark power once and for all is what gets her killed. Very powerful character moment. Also Boone was right about Akiko. There is no doubt about that anymore.

Regardless, it's hard to see the Co-Op as anything but sinister. Which is why Monkey and Bryce's cathartic fight is so interesting. You didn't expect it would be MONKEY on the wrong side of it, but it was. Very unexpected choice there.

I liked it a lot. 4 stars.

Hit-Monkey "Mind Mall"

The Mind Mall had great visuals. VERY TRON.

Kind of messed up family dynamic, but it help Bryce and Monkey work through their shit at least.

I love Bryce throwing in Monkey's face his missed Haruka's funeral. Yeah, Monkey was on the wrong side.

Cool episode. 4 stars.

Hit-Monkey "The Concrete Jungle"

That climax was so well-timed you could set your watch to it. Well played.

Coolness. 4 1/2 stars.

Hit-Monkey "History Lessons"

I did not appreciate that cliffhanger. Because that last renewal was a miracle and there is NO way I expect a repeat. Man, if that's where we're leaving things, I'll be pissed!

It was an otherwise good finale. Good drama for Bryce and Iris and good resolution for him too.

But man, that cliffhanger sucks! 3 1/2 stars.
