Harold And The Purple Crayon

I love many movies. But usually when I compliment them, I mention the things they did right, and what I responded to. My reaction (and love) of this film is different. I haven't reread all of my reviews (and there have been a lot of them) but if I've offered the following opinion about ANY movie, I'll be shocked. This movie filled a void in my pop culture life I didn't know I was missing. It's a nice and kind film with people having fun, and helping each other, and making the world a better place. And on a deeper level I knew I was missing that. One of my favorite movies, if not my favorite movie period, is The Adventures Of Elmo In Grouchland, for similar reasons. But Elmo's film had a real antagonist and a real conflict, that gave the light silliness a weight I don't think it ever needed.

Gary as the villain is tough to beat. But he's misguided, not evil, and kind of a dope. Somebody Harold can help out at the end. And kindness and understanding is the real solution.

The movie values imagination and magic, and helping people. And that's a tonic I needed in this current climate. This is not me speaking for what kids need regarding movies. I am not a kid, so I really can't speak for either what they would or even SHOULD like. But it was needed for ME. As a viewer of genre stuff that's just too much. I am glad Harold is out there creating art and imagination, and having fun, and being filled with joy with Moose and Porcupine. I'm too old to believe in imaginary friends. But I believe in being allowed to watch something that purely makes you feel good. And this movie is special because I thought I was alone in valuing that. And I hope if this movie gets a following more films, both aimed at kids and adults, start allowing us to have fun and enjoy the kindness of good people. Again, I didn't even know how badly I needed this in 2024 until I got it.

I love this film. 5 stars.
