Loki fans got what they were waiting for when Disney+ dropped the series’ Season 1 finale on July 14: Not only did they see their favorite variants potentially altering the past, present and future forever (setting the stage for several upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe films), but they also found out that the show has officially been confirmed for a Loki Season 2!
In true MCU style, Marvel revealed the news in a super-brief mid-credits scene during the Season 1 finale in which Loki’s Time Variance Authority file was stamped with the words, “Loki will return in Season 2.” That means that not only will there be a Loki Season 2, but our beloved Loki as we know him will be there…possibly with even more variants of himself than before.
Keep reading to find out everything we know so far about Loki Season 2, and what to expect when we finally get more episodes about Tom Hiddleston‘s beloved, mischievous Asgardian agent of chaos. But beware: There are spoilers ahead for Season 1 of Loki and potentially other previously released MCU entries, so if you’re not caught up yet, you may want to check back here after your next binge-watch!
Yes! That reveal may come as a surprise to some Marvel fans, because Loki creator and executive producer Michael Waldron previously said he only planned to make a single season of the series.
“It was really always my hope and intention with this to tell a complete story with this season,” Waldron explained. “Season 1 would stand on its own.” However, he also said, “Is there more story to tell in the future? I don’t know. Time will tell.” (We see what he did there.) Deadline previously reported that Waldron has a deal with Disney for a large slate of projects, including a then-unconfirmed Season 2 of Loki, as well as a Star Wars film; in addition, Waldron was already tapped by the studio to write Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness.
Other behind-the-scenes figures from the show have hinted that there were more stories to be told than could necessarily be contained in a single season. Nate Moore, Marvel Studios Vice President of Production & Development, told IndieWire, “I think there’s a lot of storytelling in Loki that’s really irreverent and clever and cool, but also lends itself to multiple seasons in a way where it’s not a one-off.”
A premiere date has yet to be set for Loki Season 2. Several variables could determine when we get to see more of the Asgardian demigod of mischief, including the production dates and release slates for the rest of the MCU, which were significantly delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
In mid-August 2021, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told Collider, “[Season 2] is underway. We’re developing it as we speak. The hope is that much of the same team will return.” He also mentioned that “the director search will begin shortly” after Season 1 director and executive producer Kate Herron went on to “bigger and better things.” Herron herself told the outlet in July 2021 about her departure, “I poured every aspect of my soul and my time into the show,” and that after Season 1 was done, she was looking forward to “sleeping. Lots of sleeping.”
Meanwhile, Production Weekly has reported that Loki Season 2 won’t start filming until 2022.
Hiddleston will likely be in Season 2 of Loki, especially considering he’s credited as an executive producer on Season 1.
Right now, only two seasons (Seasons 1 and 2) have been confirmed for Loki. The future beyond that will likely be determined by the machinations of the greater MCU.
So far, the last episode of Loki is the Season 1 finale, titled, “For All Time. Always.” This, of course, will change once Season 2 drops.
Season 1 episodes of Loki premiered on Disney+ at 3:01 a.m. ET/12:01 a.m. PT on Wednesdays. Though the time of the drops will likely remain the same for Season 2 (to prevent everyone on the East Coast from spoiling the series for their West Coast viewers), it’s unknown at this point if next season’s episodes will likewise debut on Wednesdays.
Besides Hiddleston, it remains to be seen who will appear in Loki Season 2. Depending on what happens in between its release and the releases of the rest of the projects in the MCU pipeline, we may expect to see Jonathan Majors return as Kang the Conqueror traveling between timelines, as well as Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Ravonna Renslayer. Of course, fan favorites Sophia Di Martino, Tara Strong, Wunmi Mosaku and Owen Wilson may well return to reprise their roles as Sylvie “Lady Loki” Laufeydottir, Miss Minutes, Hunter B-15 and Mobius (hopefully with a jet ski!), respectively.
No plot details have been revealed for Loki Season 2 just yet, but theories abound, and because of the nature of the end of Season 1—the opening of the multiverse—almost every single theory may well be valid. There are literally endless possibilities to what may happen as timelines branch off, converge and potentially create a multiversal war, which Kang the Conqueror insisted he was trying to prevent.
There isn’t a Loki Season 2 trailer just yet, seeing as production hasn’t even started yet, but watch this space!
Loki Season 2 may impact the rest of the MCU in a number of ways, thanks to the title character and Sylvie bringing about the multiverse in the Season 1 finale. However, exactly how we see those effects will depend on when the series is released in relation to the rest of the MCU’s slate. We do know that the multiverse will, of course, be a main feature of Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness, which is slated for March 2022; meanwhile, Spider-Man: No Way Home, hitting theaters in December 2021, is heavily rumored to involve the multiverse as well. Further, Kang the Conqueror is said to be the villain of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, scheduled to premiere in February 2023.
It’s unclear if Kang the Conqueror will appear in Loki Season 2, but technically, he didn’t appear in Season 1, either! Majors is credited not as Kang the Conqueror, but as “He Who Remains,” for Loki Season 1, whereas in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania Majors is listed as Kang the Conqueror. In the comic book source material, these are two different entities, and it remains to be seen how the multiverse versions of the character will be portrayed in the MCU.

I said the same thing when I saw the trailer Jim. I don't care how large of a role he has, this got me excited to see the show.
Sorry about editing your post, Jim, but the world needs to see that trailer right here and right now. 😉

How'd you get that to work? I tried a dozen different ways and spacing out the link was the only way it showed up.
