Marvel Studios is currently continuing to make blockbuster films, but in 2021, the studio ventured into the realm of streaming TV with a series of shows on Disney+. In 2022, it appears the studio is going even further by making at least one TV Special, an untitled Halloween show that is expected to air next October. And apparently, the studio isn’t willing to phone it in, as Marvel Studios has found yet another top-tier actor to join the MCU, Gael Garcia Bernal.

According to The Wrap, Gael Garcia Bernal is set to lead the cast of the upcoming untitled Disney+ Halloween Special that will be produced by Marvel Studios. Though it has yet to be confirmed, the reports claim the show will be based on the “Werewolf By Night” comic book series that has been a mainstay in the Marvel Universe for decades.

“Werewolf By Night” is a series about a character that has the ability to turn back and forth between a human and a werewolf, while also keeping his own intelligence along the way. There have been various iterations of “Werewolf By Night,” so it’s unclear if Bernal will play a previously seen version or a completely new character created for the MCU.

Gael Garcia Bernal has most recently appeared in M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller, “Old.” Before that, he has recently shown up in films such as “The Kindergarten Teacher,” “Museum,” “Ema,” and “Wasp Network.” His next project is the upcoming HBO Max TV series, “Station Eleven,” which is expected to premiere in December.

An exact release date for the Marvel Studios Halloween special has yet to be announced, but production is expected to begin in early 2022.

Seems crazy that this is about a month out and there have been no photos or trailers or even an official name for the thing...

EDIT: Tried looking up more info and found very little.  I was shocked to find out that it was directed by composer Michael Giacchino!  Even more interested now...

FINALLY!!!  October 7, 2022

I have to wonder if the show will actually be in black and white or if that is an effect just for the trailer, also will it keep the grindhouse kind of feel the trailer gives?...

Werewolf By Night

Spoiler

Aw, man! I am SO bummed! My computer monitor fritzed out and I had to watch the whole thing on my dad's old black-and-white TV! What'd I miss?*

Seriously, the black-and-white didn't make things scarier, but it definitely helped play up the comedic angle. Although as far as scares go, they were allowed a lot more blood and gore than usual simply because it WAS black and white.

I thought Man-Thing was pretty awesome, and I appreciated there was no damn tag teasing Blade and the Howling Commandos. It's nice to be able to enjoy a single Marvel project on its own terms for the very first time. It's refreshing actually.

It's kind of cool that since Michael Giacchino directed this, he could provide his own score. Not many directors are musicians, much less composers. So we got our money's worth on the spooky soundtrack.

Positive review. I liked it. 4 stars.

*Some of the people who read these reviews are too young to get this joke.

Fone, you mentioned Giacchino's score...  I was disappointed to find that the new arrangement of the Marvel Fanfare isn't included on the soundtrack (ya know... I'm not even sure the normal version is available to buy...).  The "special presentation" music is, though, but I certainly wouldn't buy it on it's own... $1.29 for 11 seconds?...  Really, Disney?...

I stand corrected.  Bought the soundtrack last weekend and was pleasantly surprised to find that the sinister arrangement of the Marvel Fanfare is the first part of track 2, "Mane Title"

Director by Night... (wonder why this wasn't titled as Assembled?...)

Disney+ Announces Surprise Re-Release Of A Huge MCU Hit – With A Colorful Twist
Story by Tim Lammers

A black-and-white adaptation of a hit Marvel Comics series is returning to its vibrant comic book roots and will be presented for the first time in living color. According to What's on Disney Plus, "Werewolf by Night" — a hit 52-minute MCU special that debuted on Disney+ on October 7, 2022 — is getting an upgrade on October 20, 2023. As suggested by its title, "Werewolf by Night in Color" will be presented entirely in color. Meanwhile, the original black-and-white version of the special, which was directed by Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino, will remain on the streaming service as well.

Gael Garcia Bernal stars in "Werewolf by Night" as Jack Russell, who competes with Elsa Bloodstone (Laura Donnelly) and other monster hunters to find a mystical stone that will control all monsters. Complicating matters is that Jack is a monster himself, cursed to become a werewolf.

"Werewolf by Night" is a unique release, as the black-and-white presentation is designed to harken back to the black-and-white horror films of the 1930s, '40s, and '50s. What made the original version of "Werewolf by Night" distinct is that the stone at the center of the hunt is red throughout, with a color scene appearing only at the end. Now, of course, the entire special will be presented in color, like the panels in the original "Werewolf by Night" comic book.

New version has been color graded to look like a Hammer or AIP film, nice touch that works well.  Still prefer the black and white version but this version ain't bad, either.

Werewolf By Night In Color

Spoiler

I remember liking this back when I first saw it and I still do. I think most of it plays better in black and white, but if you ask me you can't get the full Man-Thing experience without full color.

Rewatching this was pleasant because instead of just being wowed by the horror movie eye-candy I was able to slow down and appreciate some of the character moments and touches. I loved Jack smelling Laura Donnelly's character and saying he's doing it so he'll remember her after he changes. Them looking into each other's eyes was a purely pleasurable humanistic cinematic moment and one of those things that reminds me that Marvel Studios TV output isn't always entirely worthless. And it's good to sometimes get that reminder because I often forget that. A LOT.

Yeah. That felt great. It was definitely a superhero thing, but it was also an old school horror film, specifically a monster movie too. I guess I think that because for awhile before things got too bloated, the MCU films often used to explore different genres and types of stories. The MCU is now a place where the third Ant-Man movie has as huge of stakes as Endgame. This horror corner of the Marvel Universe takes me back to when things were more well-rounded and Feige wasn't constantly trying to top himself. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is NOT a huge film. It's a cold war spy thriller and my second favorite superhero movie of all time after Endgame. If more Marvel films emulated Winter Soldier's "unique to to the franchise premise" idea rather than "Everything from now on must be Endgame or bigger" the MCU would be better off.

Take note: As a Disney+ Streaming Special Disney can rate it TV-14 and nobody can say boo. If they tried to put that in a theater sans any cuts or edits, that would get an R from the MPAA. As unfathomably corrupt as they are, not enough money could possibly change hands for them to NOT insist a LOT of the violence be toned down. Just for the record.

I am glad I saw this again, and the color gimmick was a nice excuse. 4 1/2 stars.
