Bluey "The Sign"

Spoiler

I like WATCHING Bluey, but I never binge it or review it. It's like background noise comfort food. Eventually I will probably get around to watching and reviewing the whole thing. But the truth is I like the fact that my relationship to the show is pretty casual and I don't overthink how and why I love it. I don't review Sesame Street either or binge that. It's just something nice in the background.

The show IS the best preschool show of all time, even better than Sesame Street. It gives off nothing but good vibes. And besides the little kids being so cute, their selling point is they are realistic. But the show would only be HALF amazing if that were it. The adults are equally credible and realistic, which is amazing on a TV-Y rating. Even without cursing or general soccer hooliganism the adults feel like real people with real problems. And not necessarily the people with all the answers. Mum and Dad aren't sure about the move either. And the second chance for Dad comes and he takes it to a grown-up power ballad as he rips down the sign.

And do you know what that is? Drama! I got into a recent online conversation with people who are similar to me in disdaining dark television, and don't ask to be depressed by it. But Dad throwing the sign in the street? THAT actually IS drama! And drama can make the viewer feel good. I feel very sad that pop-culture has conditioned people to believe drama is a dark and unpleasant thing and always upsetting. I find drama can be cathartic and truthful. Just because the majority of popular culture uses it as misery porn to punish the viewer, that doesn't mean that's all that drama is, can be, or should be. And I love that Bluey, the preschool show, that's secretly about teaching you to be a better parent, gets that better than any HBO Emmy bait show you can think of. I admire that and respect it. Much more importantly, I ENJOY it.

Bluey is a nice thing. And despite what you may think, and what society often teaches us, sometimes We Are Allowed Nice Things. And I love and appreciate them when we are allowed them. 5 stars.
