Bob's Burgers "Manic Pixie Crap Show"

Spoiler

Louise is a very interesting character. I was equally annoyed and touched by her. I was annoyed by her sheer laziness and the fact that she refuses to put in the slightest effort to do something she doesn't want to do. Her rep as a criminal mastermind is nonexistent if she's unable to suffer through only three hours of nonsense.

I will say this:. I like that her frustration has to do with her worrying that her not liking that stuff is a sign that there is something wrong with her. I will argue there IS something wrong with her, but her interests have nothing to do with it. It's that she tries to force everyone to do things the way SHE wants. That's her problem. Not thinking the girly stuff is dumb.

She had an interesting line that faces are just a bunch of different places for holes. And maybe that's all beauty actually is.

Linda's stuff with the dog flowers was predictably obnoxious, but when she offered to hit Tammy and Jocelyn with a car door for Tina, that means she's a good Mom. Bob makes her walk that offer back, but the truth is those two snots would totally deserve it.

It was fine, if imperfect. Like Louise. 3 1/2 stars.

Bob's Burgers "Crystal Mess"

Spoiler

For the record Tammy is not the most annoying character on the show. That's Jimmy Pesto. But Tammy is the only character who is close.

I'm thinking Frond's girlfriend wasn't upset because that wasn't actually a crystal. Something that small that breaks into that many pieces is clearly glass.

I liked the teacher quipping that that was what happened when she didn't vet Tammy and Jocelyn's report.

I groaned at Louise selling crystal time for 50 cents. I haven't been a kid in a long time, but even I know that's nothing in 2021. It's not even worth the time for Tina to stand there and wait around. I think the writers weren't adjusting for inflation. But truthfully, I probably wouldn't have stood around for 50 cents a pop back in the 1980's either. The writers must have grown up in the 50's.

The whole funny shaped vegetable / pickling thing suggests the writers are running out of B stories for the restaurant. That's concerning, especially since the show has already been on the air for over ten years.

It was good. 3 1/2 stars.

Bob's Burgers "The Pumpkinening"

Spoiler

Surprisingly, in an episode with Linda and Gayle acting shady, I was more annoyed at Bob than anyone.

To be fair, I really like the fact that he is creeped out by Louise's Peter Pan Labyrinth costume. But it's all downhill from there.

What kind of dummy is Bob that he sets out coughdrops for Halloween and is shocked kids hate them? I wasn't relieved at the end that he set aside three packets of the good candy for the kids. I was angry he didn't tell them he was going to do that ahead of time. They were suffering all night and he could have let them know he had them covered. And I'd say barely. A good father would have set aside a few packs for them EACH. I think Bob's thoughtlessness in this episode is down to stupidity and the fact that Bob can't actually remember what it was like to be a kid. He was totally getting on my nerves.

That effected my enjoyment of the episode. 2 1/2 stars.

Bob's Burgers "Driving Big Dummy"

Spoiler

As the thing with Bob and Teddy was going I knew I'd have some strong opinions about that.

The moral at the end was right, but the frustrating thing is that until it's reached, the episode treats Teddy as annoying and Bob as put-upon. It's actually the other way around. What frustrates me most is that word of mouth and making friendships and relationships isn't simply a positive Teddy quality like the episode points out. It's a necessity to Teddy's line of work. Word of mouth and strong long term relationships are everything for a handyman, and Teddy isn't just talking to people because he's lonely, or to annoy Bob, or even because he's merely friendly and likes other people. A large part of it is because it's good for his business. I don't even think that Bob understood at the end that if he ever took the time to learn and build up that particular skill, business in his restaurant would skyrocket. The show has said multiple times the burgers there are amazing. And the restaurant is still somehow always struggling. It's down to the service entirely.

Speaking of which, I like the idea that Linda is secretly amazing at the restaurant when she has to be. When the kids are talking about cutting out Bob and simply running the restaurant with the four of them, it actually potentially sounds like that would make financial sense.

For the record, I can compliment Linda for that. But I still can't believe she let them eat ice cream out of the nozzle. She better have disinfected and cleaned that thing like nobody's business afterwards. The 20 second pour was already the greatest prize possible. The nozzle thing was just a gross and bad idea.

Speaking as someone with Asperger's, I did not relate to Bob's rudeness over Teddy trying to keep up friendly contacts with the people who hire him. Even I know rudeness when someone else is trying to work for what it is. Bob puts a LOT of pride and weight to his own vocation. It's a damn shame he is never willing to do the same for other people, or even consider the idea that Teddy takes HIS job as seriously as Bob does. 3 stars.

Bob's Burgers "Seven-tween Again"

Spoiler

I always feel so sorry for the people in Gene's life. He is such a chore to deal with.

I like that the daycare teacher knew he was lying the entire time. Gene's gonna need to get Gus a Father's Day card. Also Bob. And Bob's taken.

Larry Murphy was credited for Gretchen instead of Teddy. Gretchen is kind of a mess. I would never let her cut my hair. Her salon sounds gross.

I love how delighted Bob was with the new place. The guy saying his wife was smart to have him come in her place was awesome too.

It was good, even for a Gene episode. 3 1/2 stars.

Bob's Burgers "Beach, Please"

Spoiler

Louise frustrates me. So much. Her life would actually be great with an ounce of common sense. Mr. Fischoeder decided it would be more financially sound to hire carnies to clean up the Wharf than do the Three-Quarter Wonka. And it's the fact that Louise demanded it which is why she's dumb. And if she had even a LICK of common sense, once he suggested that, she should have lowered her demands to just include a day at the park with free food. THAT would actually cost Fischoeder MUCH less than hiring carnies to clean up the beach indefinitely. Am I happier for the environment by Louise's loss? Yes. But Louise could have had a fun day if she hadn't insisted in shutting down the park. That is an insane, and yes, STUPID demand. She believes she's a criminal mastermind. I actually find her super dumb.

For the record, the field trip being conceived after Frond watched convicts pick up garbage on the beach, is another thing that proves that this show is a kid's best friend. I do not ever see any other pop-culture besides this one, not even The Simpsons in their heyday, point out that adults always make such constant stupid and bad decision for kids (which they do in real life). And Mr. Frond isn't even one of those evil adults that the kids regularly encounter. What's so frustrating about Mr. Frond's idea is that it's realistic. Adults will pick activities for kids they will not like because they don't believe they SHOULD ever like activities at school. That idea would never occur to them. Like the three mile walk a few seasons ago, it's also something so awful the adult themselves would never participate in it. If you want proof that kids get a raw deal and that adults generally aren't looking out for their best interest? The example of adults using a clean-up at the beach as a remotely acceptable use of their time, says adults are stupid and kids need to be wary of most, if not all, of them. And the reason the message is sound is because this is the crap adults did to me as a kid, and currently do to this generation of kids. It's unfair, and for some reason the adults thinks it's fine and dandy to force kids to do something they would never EVER do themselves. And I don't recognize many real kids in the kid characters on this show. They act like mini-stand-up comedians, (because that is who they are voiced by). But the horrible way the adults treat them makes this show seem extremely and unpleasantly realistic, despite the kids speaking like Vaudeville acts. It's interesting (and wrong at the same time).

Mickey is not voiced by Bill Hader in this episode. What I like is that clearly the producers hope that this was just a scheduling conflict and that they can get him back. Loren Bouchard voiced him here. If they didn't want (or couldn't get) Hader back, they would have recast him with a name. Frankly, Bouchard absolutely sucks in the role. The good news is it might only be temporary.

Mr. Fischoeder describing free child labor as the best kind of labor sums up this 'munch in a nutshell. What kills me is that he's actually reasonable. If Louise were actually the diabolical conwomen she sells herself as, she could have gotten a LOT more out of this than if she weren't clearly in over her head. But at least the beach is clean.

I hate mustaches (all facial hair really) and Teddy's is particularly gross. Weird thing to obsess over. You want to talk shaving, I'll yap you ear off though, so maybe I'm no better.

Jocelyn complaining she didn't want to get her bag dirty with trash is why my sympathy over the fact that Louise's stupidity is screwing over her friends is limited. Her friends are morons. They don't deserve to be negotiated on behalf of a REAL criminal mastermind. Tina has been shown more than once that she hates her peers deep down, and thinks that even their "cool" clique is majorly lame. Stuff like that is a legit reason why.

I was frustrated on behalf of how crappy the adults treated the kids. And I was frustrated that Louise didn't have the intelligence necessary to stop herself and her friends from being treated crappily. Frustrating week all around. 3 stars.

Bob's Burgers "Loft In Bedslation"

Spoiler

You know what? I loved that Teddy helped Louise finish the loft bed in the end credits. The space wound up looking great. Much cooler than Louise's crappy drawing.

That cry snore is gonna haunt Louise.

I like Shirley. Very lovable new character. Bob's speech at the end about trying new things was amazing because it was really helpful to her. I liked that bit a lot.

I didn't love the whole episode but things really came together in the last few minutes. 3 1/2 stars.

Bob's Burgers "Stuck In The Kitchen With You"

Spoiler

Thankszilla. I like that. Bob really DOES get crazy when he's talking as the food.

Bob said something new. I've heard many middle-aged people in fiction protest the idea of eventually winding up in an old-age home, but Bob is the first to ever use the excuse that they'd never be able to afford it. That's a new one.

I love that Louise got to be Captain Casserole at the end too.

I like the lady saying old people really liked to unwrap hard candies when it's quiet. Says everything about old people.

It was pretty good, but nothing Earth-shattering. 3 1/2 stars.

Bob's Burgers "FOMO You Didn't"

Spoiler

I always find myself annoyed with episodes where Tammy has a large role. Tina wanting that loser's approval never makes me happy.

Also for once, I wasn't feeling or agreeing with Bob's frustration with Linda. What Linda was doing WAS sweet. It's good he acknowledged that at the end, but I found his impatience far more obnoxious than Linda getting excited over this specific cute thing.

On the good side, I thought the photography teacher had a great and realistic-sounding voice.

But it was still not a great week. 2 1/2 stars.

Bob's Burgers "Gene's Christmas Break"

Spoiler

It was nice. But it was also hard to feel sympathy for Gene. He's so stupid he sleeps on a record. Gene is one of those characters who ruins everything with his laziness and carelessness. I am not surprised one bit when it caused HIM to suffer for once. That's what happens to stupid people.

I love that Teddy likes the plaque. Bob sure doesn't though.

I did like the ending of Gene fixing up the clearly terrible remake of the album the family made. Which leads me to believe they should have asked the one musical member in the family for help all along.

Gene is a very tough character to take pity on. He brings all his problems on himself. ***.

Bob's Burgers "Touch Of Eval(uations)"

Spoiler

Louise never fails to unimpress me with her lack of intelligence and common sense. It never occurred to her as she was filling out that evaluation of how horrible it actually was? She only realizes it in hindsight? Louise would be easier for me to forgive for something like that if she WERE the sociopath she pretends to be. Since she does actually care, that just makes her stupid. And that aspect of Louise is very realistic for a kid. But it's not helping out Bob's Burgers.

To be fair, the plotline ended right with Louise learning the lesson that the teacher pushes her because she's smart. But for an actual smart person, something like that should be self-evident.

At least Miss Labonz got the parking space at the end.

The lack of firm resolution to Bob and Linda's burial drama made me feel that entire plot was pointless. I don't think I'm wrong.

It had a nice ending, and I like the nuance it gave Miss Labonz. But while I think Tina is the most maddening character on the show, Louise might be second. She really shouldn't be. Linda and Gene should be more annoying and less sensible than she is. But every Louise spotlight leads me to believe this supposed criminal mastermind simply isn't very bright. **1/2.

Bob's Burgers "Ferry On My Wayward Bob And Linda"

Spoiler

I didn't like most of it but I like how it ended. I like that it ended on Bob and Linda entering the restaurant but we didn't get to see how it went. I like that very much.

I also thought it was kind of cool that the kids helped Jen with her weird romance with the notary. She's babysitted them how many times and she supposedly didn't know they have a bathroom? And she's dumb enough to believe a family of five doesn't have one in their apartment? I'm half thinking if Louise had actually blackmailed her after all, somebody this dumb would have deserved it.

I didn't enjoy that for the most part, but it ended right. **1/2.

Bob's Burgers "Frigate Me Knot"

Spoiler

Man, what a great ending. The idea that those guys always looked up to Teddy and considered him their friend is this show at its best.

I liked Louise's twisted monkey thing.

For the record, when Linda is finished telling her story, it reminded me why I would never be friends with that character for any reason. She makes Melania Trump look classy in comparison. She is so freaking gross.

I liked the guy having to explain the knot to Bob as if he's a little kid. Him finally being able to do it is not the moral victory the characters think it is.

That was great, but I'm subtracting half a star because Linda makes me want to puke. ****1/2.

Bob's Burgers "Video Killed The Gen-io Star"

Spoiler

I very much like the idea that Gene objects to the video for reasons of artistic integrity. I feel like the show often does wrong by Gene in the way they portray his musical aspirations as shallow and lazy. That was the show doing right by them for once.

And Teddy goes to Bob for the hug. Because of course he does.

I am with Bob in only being freaked out upon learning the briefcase is filled with walnuts. That is outright weird. We are in the presence of death.

Return of "Lick it like you like it." NOT a catchphrase I've missed.

Pretty good. Not great. ***1/2.

Bob's Burgers "Ancient Misbehavin"

Spoiler
I was annoyed by both plots in the episode. Not a strong showing for Louise for sure, and Bob's stuff was boring. *1/2.

Bob's Burger's "Interview With A Pop-Pop-Pire"

Spoiler

I will say I hated about two thirds of the episode (literally the first two stories) but I'm giving it a passing grade for three reasons.

1. Popular culture can never talk about smack about The Giving Tree. It is literally the worst children's book of all time. That needs to be pointed out more.

2. Pop-Pop's actual story and talk with Bob at the end were quite sweet.

3. I need to actually give it up for Eric Bauza. I could not tell it was him. As far as voice actors go, Bauza is really the only one I can think of who can voice characters that sound nothing like each other. For Seth MacFarlane, for Mel Blanc, there's ALWAYS a little bit of them in each voice that makes them recognizable as one of their performances. Bauza magically disappears completely into his roles. He is a freaking ghost. There is no Bugs Bunny OR Daffy Duck in Big Bob. No Baby Fozzie. No Splinter. No Stimpy. It's insane what a chameleon this guy is with his voice. I'm not going to call him the greatest voice performer of all time (I haven't seen him do enough dramatic acting to declare that) but he's definitely the one guy I often need to check the credits to find out who he voiced.

Most of that sucked but the last act was super interesting for multiple reasons. ***.

Bob's Burgers "The Spider House Rules"

Spoiler

I liked the episode, but I have to say I especially liked that at the beginning of the episode Louise learned people actually dislike her dangerous behavior, and that they think that it's unusual and weird. It's interesting that fact actually had an effect on her, and was the reason she was protecting the spider, but the truth is that is not a moral her parents should have bought back at the end. I think Bob is a great parent. But he's doing Louise no favors by normalizing the crazy and destructive things she does. They aren't interesting. They're obnoxious.

Who sees a free mirror and thinks about smashing it? Linda of course, but Linda sucks. Her fart story to Tina reminded me that she's also totally gross.

Bob suggests it's wrong to smash a mirror that never hurt anybody, and Louise says his mirror hurts him every day. That is a great joke. It's a smart joke you have to think on a bit, so you aren't apt to belly-laugh at it. But it's still great.

Isn't Mort Bob's friend? Can't believe he wasn't even mentioned.

It was good, but I feel like Louise being empowered at the end is a bad message for her. If anything, she needs to be humbled, whether it makes her feel bad or not. So The Simpsons won the night of Fox toons. Pretty handily too. ***1/2.

Bob's Burgers "Clear And Present Ginger"

Spoiler

I didn't like it. It was a bit of a trial. Linda is gross enough. The fact that Gretchen and Gayle are somehow even grosser made this a not fun night.

Nat's stuff's was more successful because I like Nat a lot. I like that the fact that she's gay is not made a big deal. Tina was annoying with her stupid drama, but I liked the things Bob said to calm her.

But the truth is it was a bit of a chore of an episode to endure. Kinda sucky. The Simpsons easily won the night of Fox toons. **.

Bob's Burgers "A-Sprout A Boy"

Spoiler

Gene continues to be annoying.

Let me also also be honest about Tamagotchi. As far as fads go, that was also super annoying. I can't believe kids actually dug it. Someone tells you kids gravitate towards new and trendy things I'll remind them how Tamagotchi was once a rage with them at a time when actual good videogames existed. The thing that annoyed me most about those toys is how utterly pointless they ultimately are. It's asking a kid to put in an actual time and effort for something that isn't actually fun. For the record, this is the EXACT reason I stopped playing Free Cell on my computer. Wasting my time and energy on things I like is fine. Wasting them on things that bore me is not actually okay.

It was a lousy episode but I liked two things.

1. The time lapse sequence was good.

2. I laughed at the guy asking if it would be rude if he gently moved his son from the van, closed the doors, and drove away. Nobody on this show speaks like a real person, but I think real people would be better off if we spoke like the characters on this show.

But really, the only thing more annoying than Gene is Tamagotchi. **1/2.

Bob's Burgers "Sauce Side Story"

Spoiler

I thought that was a pretty darn good one. The premise was funny, because as Louise pointed out at the end, the feud was SO damn stupid. The Kids really should not have needed to point that out. Linda's side of the family is utterly broken. Gayle is just the tip of the iceberg.

Their cousin who liked Buckaroo Banzai was cool though. Even though he didn't want to share his chicken.

There are two disturbing possibilities about the writers having Gayle say that it's 4000 times harder to raises cats than human children. The first disturbing possibility is that the writers don't understand exactly how loathsome that makes Gayle sound. The even more disturbing possibility is that they DO, and had her say it anyways. Crap like that is why I hate the character so much.

Great week otherwise though. ****1/2.

Bob's Burgers "Some Like It Bot Part 1: Eighth Grade Runner"

Spoiler

This isn't the first two-parter the show has done but they are hella rare. What I will say is that the stakes for this are FAR lower than for "Bob Saves / Destroys The Town".

One of my favorite previous episodes of the show was where it's revealed Tina is frustrated by her peer group and the fact that Tammy, Jocelyn, Jimmy Junior, and Zeke are all so stupid and boring. The fact that zeroes like Tammy and Jocelyn are trendsetters in Wagstaff's version of a cool kid clique says Tina was absolutely right to be upset all of her peers are so stupid and lame. I will be first to admit that Tina is not cool. But she shouldn't be made to feel that way if every single other kid who does is far lamer than she is.

Mr. Grant also once again proves that the adults in position of authority on this show (outside of Bob) are all sinister.

I very much liked the fact that Linda was there to smooth things over with the customers when Bob and Teddy went berserk over the insulting bathroom graffiti. Linda isn't great, but she DOES have some value after all, I guess.

The Blade Runner spoof sort of said something interesting about that film that I noticed, but didn't think it was a big enough deal to complain about in my recent review of the film. The soundtrack (specifically the score) SUCKS. And it's a problem with all sci-fi movies of that era outside of Star Wars (and, well, Star Trek: The Motion Picture). But depressing sci-fi 70's electronica sounds lame. And Blade Runner IS a great film. But this is the first thing to show its music isn't great. And I like that it lets us hear that for ourselves, instead of merely taking a shot at it through a wisecrack. It's a pretty cool and on-the-ball observation there.

The musical numbers on this show are always awful, especially compared to the great stuff The Simpsons, Family Guy, Futurama, and American Dad have come up with. I'm surprised the show still does them. They never, EVER work. I think the writers simply think listening to H. Jon Benjamin badly sing off-key is amusing in and of itself, but they couldn't be more wrong about that.

I don't think this was an episode that needed to be stretched into two parts, but I'll know for sure next week. ***1/2.

Bob's Burgers "Some Like It Bot Part 2: Judge-Bot Day"

Spoiler

It was nice although it didn't need to be stretched to a two-parter.

I think the guy at the end trying to rush by the window of the restaurant was the graffiti culprit.

Aziz Ansari was credited as Daryll but he didn't appear in the episode.

Pretty good. ***1/2.

Bob's Burgers "To Bob, Or Not To Bob"

Spoiler

I love that they added to sinkhole to the grand re-re-opening part of the main title from the movie. It would be neat if that is a permanent change going forward.

I never liked the joke of Bob talking as the burgers. It makes him seem too crazy.

I love Teddy saying "I like it" before the trainwreck of a play even began.

Basically the same quality as The Bob's Burgers Movie. Which is pretty much the biggest reason the show never needed a damn movie to begin with. ***1/2.
