Despicable Me

It was cute enough, but considering how successful the franchise is, I kind of expected it to be better.
But the Minions and the girls were super cute (and Agnes and her stuffed unicorns were adorable) and I love that Gru kissed them all at the end of the movie.
Other thoughts:
I liked the puppet book, especially Gru critiquing it as bad literature.
I like that the girls don't throw a fit when Gru lets them down. The movie allows Gru to come to the conclusion he needs to do better with them on his own without them telling him (rightly) how much he sucks. The fact that Margot sullenly thanks him for letting them stay before they are taken back to the orphanage is one of the reasons I like the girls.
The movie ending on a dance party is something I loathed. I really dislike modern cartoon movies for that reason. It really lessened my enjoyment of the whole thing.
It was cute and diverting, but considering the hype, I think it should have been amazing instead of passable. ***1/2.
