The Great North "Brace/Off Adventure"
The construction of the song lyrics were very elaborate and clever and much better than Bob's Burgers.
I also liked the resolution that the club was actually fake and in a kid's basement (with the Mom's permission). I saw Judy still having her braces on coming but that was a funny surprise.
The scene with the giant talking teeth on the bus was crazy, funny, and scary in equal measure.
It was a good first episode back for the sophomore season. 4 stars.
The Great North "The Great Punkin' Adventure"
I have no notes. Only compliments.
Yeah, I like this show now. It's found its voice. The Tobins are a happy well-adjusted family, which is refreshing.
I like that Wolf and Ham worry that the song will "crush" Beef. That's the concern. Not that he'd be furious. He's such a nice and understanding parent that he actually discusses punishing Ham for disobedience as a question, partly to gauge if that's what Ham actually wanted. I love that.
And I like Ham is not kicked out of the band at the end, because the band leader's mom liked the song, and "she does a lot of stuff for him". That says volumes.
And I knew I was going to compliment the Tobins on being a happy family even before this. Once Honeybee declared all of the Tobins' various silly ideas were "Golden" I was like, "This is a family that actually likes each other." It's kind of silly but it's also refreshing.
I'm fully on-board this show now. 5 stars.
The Great North "The Yawn Of The Dead Adventure"
The kids are dumb because the explanations at the end should have been self-evident, but this is a good show because the show got to all the explanations anyways. It doesn't matter that the kids are silly, all of the i's being dotted and the t's crossed makes for a more satisfying story.
The dark days and light days in Alaska was one of the more interesting elements of Northern Exposure. I wish that show had explored them more. Hopefully this show will.
Pretty dumb. But all the kids besides Moon are ridiculous. 3 1/2 stars.
The Great North "Wanted: Delmer Alive Adventure"
Never heard of the "Tickling the baby" trope, but it sounds like a thing.
For the record, The Cabin In The Woods was NOT a horror film set at camp. Not even close.
Delmer's voice interests me. He doesn't sound like a professional actor at all, which makes him sound weirdly realistic, even if his line readings are dry, and sound like they are being read off cue cards. It's the weird accent that makes him credible, I think.
All right. 3 stars.
The Great North "Beef's Craig Beef Adventure"
It was good but perhaps not good enough to do a whole recap. There was one part I thought was funny and worth mentioning though. When Judy sees the fisherwomen down at the docks and finds them sexy, she decides to file that idea away for later and declares that she loves being 16. Stuff like that is why I love Judy.
It was a solid week. 3 1/2 stars.
The Great North "Skidmark Holmes Adventure"
I was glad to see Alanis Morrissette. Not because I think she as a concept or a character works. But she hadn't appeared yet this season, and I think if the show had simply dropped the idea, it would show weakness in the premise, and suggest the writers didn't believe in the quirky Judy-focused Pilot deep down. Frankly, that Pilot wasn't great. But the Alanis thing was unusual and I like that the show simply decided to bill her as a regular cast member for season two when she appears, instead of getting rid of her.
The mystery was classic Bouchardverse stuff, and not a particularly well-crafted or thought out one at that. But there were cool things in it.
For example I don't remember the name of the pizza girl, but I love that she asks the right questions and Judy immediately puts her charge of the investigation. My favorite bit of her backstory is that her mom homeschooled her because she didn't feel comfortable with the idea of her being surrounded by all those white kids. And then they hit trig and her Mom's all, "Nope. Not doing this." I like the backstory the more I think about it, especially because she shares it. Because it says something about the kids on this show that should be true of all kids. But Alaska is a pretty red state, very susceptible to grievance-based populism. By all rights, pizza girl's story should offend the kids. It would have if she had said it within earshot of a white adult. But red state or not, kids there think their parents messed up racial beliefs are stupid and pointless, so pizza girl correctly surmises this group of kids would sympathize with how dumb that is instead of being mad. Is it true to life? Maybe not. There are some ugly kids being raised in red states. Is it believable on this specific positive show, where Judy's best friend is allowed to actually like and care about her and want her to throw a great party? Where Pizza Girl sees Ham's note of appreciation for his dad on the fridge and thinks he's awesome for it? Definitely yes.
Beef's stuff with the woman crushing on him didn't resonate with me pretty much because we are still in a holding pattern about it. That's fine for now, but the status quo about that specific thing will not be tolerable indefinitely. I sincerely hope the show knows what it is doing there.
And no kid, we're NOT gonna talk about how the guy likes keeping his grandma's underwear close to him at all times. Although I agree with him that we probably should have.
One of the things I liked about Season 1 is that Judy seemed to be the central character. The season 2 premiere was about her, but the rest of the season has sort of been stepping away from that. I very much would like to see the show continue having her be the viewpoint character for the audience. Not just because she is more relatable than Beef, but because with the exception of maybe Bless The Harts, none of the adult Fox toons seem female centered. And Bless The Harts, was a pretty crappy show when all was said and done. I LIKE and am rooting for this show. I'd love to see it made into a female led animated adult-oriented comedy that actually works. That would be great.
The episode was technically only okay, but things are headed in the right direction. 3 1/2 stars.
The Great North "Tasteful Noods Adventure"
That restaurant is so gross. It made me ill just thinking about it. Frankly all of the compliments the Toobins were giving it at the beginning of the episode struck me as serious faults, and that the Toobins were doofy for liking them. It turns out they were actually red flags.
I liked the play-acting bit with Moon, Bethany and the pirates. Honeybee saying she was going to use her cutlass to cut them stern to anus was great. I love Honeybee.
I think the episode was a little too gross for me. Sorry. 2 1/2 stars.
The Great North "Good Beef Hunting Adventure"
The idea that Beef considers the Pilgrims self-involved freeloaders is a pleasantly unexpected surprise.
Also so is the idea that Judy is such an Alanis Morrissette fan that she knows her history on You Can't Do That On Television.
I like that Moon's word was bleeped.
Toilets DO look like pelicans.
My biggest complaint is that it is not remotely credible that Beef was able to build that huge sprawling ice maze, somehow identical to one Ham and Wolf had for their mice as kids, on the spur of the moment. It's such a foolish notion that I outright dislike it. This show should not be permitted to be that stupid. I'd only accept it if it were worse. Because it's not, it pisses me off instead.
Beef only uses the toilet every 4 days? Weird, but also not unexpected.
It was all right, but the ice maze bugged the crap out of me. 3 stars.
The Great North "From Tusk Til Dawn Adventure"
I laughed at the innocuous questions turning out to be porno names. Good comedy there.
I love Tusk telling Dan he could have gotten five grand from the smugglers because they really hated him.
I continue to love Honeybee.
Refreshing that Tusk wanting to turn over a new leaf was genuine. I was surprised, but it's actually very consistent for this show.
I love the reason Moon apparently now hates music.
The twincest smugglers were the one thing in the episode I didn't like. Creepy.
Everything else was good. 4 stars.

The Great North "Dip The Halls Adventure"
That costume hunter guy was so crazy.
I like the way Beef speaks. He speaks matter-of-factly, literally, and very precisely when describing being on drugs. He reminds me a bit of Anya from Buffy The Vampire Slayer in this regard.
Pretty good. ***1/2.

The Great North "Dances With Wolfs Adventure"
I find the idea of the politics of animals in office annoying rather than endearing so that part of the episode tried my patience.
Frankly, Wolf did too. I was getting to strongly dislike him. And then it turns out he loves the Obamas and I sort of like him again.
On the one hand it's sort of funny they got Lisa Rinna to voice herself. On the other, what else is she doing?
I love that the family simply loves Honeybee's Convertible. It's funny, because that's an absolutely lousy car for Alaska. Its best feature (the wind blowing in your face) actually sucks a little because it's so damn cold. I like Judy and Beef pretending otherwise.
Some of it bugged me but it was sort of cute. ***.

The Great North "Beef Mommas House Adventure"
I think the Moms are pretty great characters. That being said, I didn't like learning Beef stopped speaking to a friend who told him his wife cheated on him. That was a mistake for the writers to do. They did that to set up the dilemma of whether or not Beef should tell his new friend her boyfriend was cheating, but learning he did that makes me like him a LOT less than I did before learning that. Bad writing mistake there.
Moon's boring, but he'll save your life. Better keep him around.
After seeing Wolf's panic attack, I'm wondering what Honeybee actually sees in him. The fact that she is able to have ANY sexual feelings for that specific man is either admirable or insane.
It was pretty good, but I think the writers missed the mark with Beef's backstory. ***.

The Great North "Saved By The Spells Adventure"
The Alanis Morrissette bit at the beginning was a good one.
I am struck by what a nice guy Judy's principle is.
Beef's stuff with Moon over the CB radio was adorable.
I have no idea why Honeybee and Wolf work. But they somehow crazily do.
Cute. ***1/2.

The Great North "Stools Rush In Adventure"
Here's something: I actually agree with the theater teacher that Judy is attention-starved and tries to make every theater production about herself. She and her new friend can say the teacher sucks, but I think she got what was going on perfectly.
I don't know if I've had occasion to mention this before, but Moon is a shockingly boring character. Bob's Burgers has Louise, and The Great North has him. And the contrast in little kids wearing animal ears cannot be more stark. He's neither funny nor interesting.
It was all right, I suppose, but I didn't really respond to it. **1/2.

The Great North "You've Got Math Adventure"
It was good. I'm not a huge Moon fan, but I'm a big Honeybee fan.
The Group Soup thing was gross though.
Solid. ***1/2.

The Great North "As Goldie As It Gets Adventure"
That was super cute.
Goldie is SUCH a manipulative con artist and Ham is such an easy mark. And yet in her moment of talking about her dead husband Paul at the end of the episode, and about how Ham needed to go to Crispin and seize the moment, I thought she was absolutely wonderful. And the fact that she's coke-head is funny too.
Listening to Beef being forced to grinningly and painfully compliment Judy's various awful failures is comedy gold that never gets old. I picture the show going back to this comedy well many times in the future. It's funny as hell.
Speaking of which, the Tobin's swear jar is so full because they love swearing. Hell, yeah, they do.
SO cute. ****1/2.

The Great North "Dead Moon Walking Adventure"
I don't like Moon, but even I think he could probably do with a better friend than Debby. He thought the diaper and the stuffed sloth being self-humiliating would humble her. In fact it made her feel like beating him up would embarrass her. Yeah, he can do better.
Speaking if which, I didn't much like Beef's behavior this episode. To his credit, when the museum owner tells him truthfully how he feels, Beef is supportive. But the reality is he was making decisions he had no business making. I find people who do that obnoxious, and those kinds of people populate a LOT of fiction. It never makes me happy.
I like Debby's mom. Very much.
The helmet in gym class says that Moon is very much a character like Louise from Bob's Burgers in that we are never allowed to see the tops of their heads.
Buffets are already super gross. The Tobins being extra gross at them does not endear them to me. At all.
It was all right. But I found parts of it annoying. ***.

The Great North "Beef's In Toyland Adventure"
Honeybee and Wolf were all kinds of cringe this episode. I laughed that Honeybee gave him permission to delete some of their wedding photos for the mall hunk, but it got to be too painful by the end.
The 50 Shades Of Wade song in the end credits was great.
Beef's stuff was sort of stupid, but I liked the gag of the figurine peeing in the beer stein. You can barely taste it. I also like that the woman's dead cat was named Doctor Dumbass. It was a stray and she couldn't bear to change the name.
By turns dumb, annoying, and funny. A mixed bag this week. ***.

The Great North "Poetry Of The Penals Adventure"
Wolf was annoying. He usually is but even by his standards he grated tonight.
I like that Beef accidentally spoke a poem at the reading.
What rhymes with "God help me"? Try "Fraud kelp knee."
Didn't love it. **1/2.

The Great North "Say It Again, Ham Adventure"
Ham's boyfriend saying he thought there was something off, but now he thought something was REALLY off about the cousin was a fine example of understatement.
I liked the police sisters and the fact that they keep their guns in their glove compartment. Honeybee is dismayed Danica is forcing her to ask her to treat them nicer. That was a great joke.
In the end, the moral is it doesn't have to be a drama to come out. Expectations about that sort of thing are probably misguided.
I liked the reference to Christopher Meloni because it wasn't just a slam. It was equal parts a compliment. That one of the cool things about the celebrity references on this show. They're are biting, but not mean, and in fact usually come from a loving place.
It was fun. ****.

The Great North "Slide And Wet-judice Adventure"
Honestly? I was annoyed by most of it. I thought Neckbone was nice (although I question her life choices) and I laughed that Honeybee was impressed with "Teen Wolf". But not a lot else clicked.
I thought Jenny Slate's performance as Judy went crazy felt forced. I'm reminded strongly that Wolf is TOO pathetic of a character, and has become by turns obnoxious and truly sad because of it. And Beef's stuff with the mermaids was so nuts it also bugged me. And Honeybee wants to meet Jason Patrick? NOBODY wants to meet Jason Patrick.
Wolf realizing he's made poor choices felt right however, and it's interesting that this is probably the first time we've seen Moon's hair. But I didn't really care for the episode. **1/2.

The Great North "Papa Don't Fiend Adventure"
I thought it was kind of gross. Ham saying "Yuck" summed it up for me. As did Judy's gross fart.
And the ending was beyond predictable (although it causing Beef to laugh was funny) but the truly unpredictable thing would have been Moon's friendship with the skunks to NOT end that way. Of course that may have been comedy malpractice, but still.
So-so. ***.

The Great North "A Knife To Remember Adventure"
I like that they revamped the main title to include Alanis.
The musical numbers grated, as they do on Bob's Burgers.
I find it kind of dumb that Wolf has to apologize to Honeybee for telling strangers he loves them over the phone. My absolute favorite Honeybee moment was a couple of seasons ago when a little kid called her as a wrong number, and we don't hear his end of the conversation, but she signs off confidently saying "I love you too." That's endearing, not something to work on.
It was pretty good. ***1/2.
